The BN is just a casting number. Most oS engines have something like that on the crankcase.

In the "real" old days you got 3 digit numbers because that's what the next number was. My dad had a good friend named Carl Van Cort. His number was AMA 98. That was his real number. No contest director or anything else. Met him at the 63 NATS at Los Alimitos. Dad's number is 1984, and that was the number he was issued in 1936. A bit higher than Carl Goldberg's. Now days your AMA number really doesn't tell much of anything. In the OLD DAYS it showed went you joined.
