In that case I would go with what I know. I have never seen a bad OS 46. My OS 40 is a screamer, and people think it's a 46. I have no experience with the smaller tigers. I do have a GMS 47 that is an excellent engine with unreal compression. It's only problem is that it won't shut off. I just pull the fuel line and don't worry about it.

I also have the gms .47 and have had nothing but good luck with it, lots of power and very reliable. I think the OS 46 gets great reviews but its not cheap.

I really like Super Tigre engines but the mufflers are big, ugly, heavy and a real pain to keep on the engine. For that reason I have to go with the OS ax 46

If you plan to do any 3D stuff then go with the OS (better throttle response, more power) but you might also want to check out the Thunder Tigre 46Pro. It's cheaper than the OS and better value for money, in my (and many other folks) opinion anyway.
I just put new bearings in one that has already done over 200 hours and when I tached it today, it was just as strong as the one I bought at Christmas (which has about 5 hours on it now).
The TT46Pro can be had for as little as $74 -- at that price it's a real bargain and lots of profile 3D fliers love them.

The permenant fit to the ST muffler problem is------------Don't use a gasket--------- Use a little RTV silicone instead of gasket. Put a little thread locker or RTV on bolt threads. Make sure you clean threads an exhaust surfaces with alchohol. Two ways to lose a little muffler weight is drill baffle out of inside muffler and cut header length off if not needed.

If money is no object maybee you should consider the O.S. 50 sx. I think you will be hard pressed to find a sport engine, that will fit the same mounting pattern, with more power.

If money's no object then the OS will make you very happy and it's hard to find fault with them, the AX is a fine engine (and doesn't peel like the FX used to).

GMS engines are quite powerful -- possibly even moreso than the OS but they're also a little variable in quality and have had carb issues.
All the member of our club have now had a guts-full of GMS engines and won't buy another. Sometimes they run okay, but all too often they produce deadstick landings or suffer from fuel-surging in the air.
If you want to narrow the choice down to two, make it TT versus OS.

OS46AX. If you want a motor that you can buy at the LHS and run right out of the box...HASSLE FREE then that's the motor for you.
When you go with the chinese stuff...who knows. You might get a good one....but there's an even better chance you won't.
The best value is the engine that gives you a return on your investment. A more expensive model that gives great performance, and no trouble is a far better "deal" than a real-steal that never runs well.
It all depends on how you like to spend your time. Flying? Or waiting for the UPS truck to deliver the "replacement" engine.
The TT46 has a great rep....I can't comment because I've never run one. The OS46AX? I've run dozens and have yet to see a dog in the bunch.

It is difficult to beat an OS for just plain old good running and good power right out of the box. However, the TT.46Pro comes extremely close (without problems) to matching the OS.
Some OFs, like me, enjoy tinkering with engines. We tend to look at the Chinese stuff as a challenge and strut around proud as peacocks when we do get them sorted out. Sometimes, most of the time, there's really no sorting out needed. Just once in a while.
I still buy them all. But were I not inclined to tinker, I would choose the OS or the Thunder Tiger first. Super Tigre next, etc. While I do buy a few premium engines now and again, such as Rossi, MVVS, etc., I don't recommend them to low time R/C folks. It's usually just a waste of money and they can be difficult to obtain parts for at times.

"OF" Ed? I'm a card carrying Jr. Member of the "OF Fraternity" I'll have you know.....<GGGG>
Can't argue with the thrill of taming a particularly diabolical engine, but you'd have to agree...it's a lot more fun to do at home...in the backyard, at a time and date of your choosing. Far less desirable to tangle with a newbs "Xiangpao .46" at the field when it's 150F in the shade, the bugs are biting like crazy and the humidity is akin to the jungles of Vietnam.
At that level...the new guy will introduce enough variables in the set up to challenge any "pro", and it's extremely helpful to not have built in/designed in defects in the engine itself. That's why the OS gets my vote every time.
(Then they mention that they had 'er apart...."To see what was in it")
Oh joy....but I digress.
Rather than begin with a 4 session lesson in advanced engine diagnostics...I'd prefer to start him off with some straight and level.
We'll get to the tuning/troubleshooting/set up stuff as we go. Sort of a phased approach is better IMO.
I just look back over 30yrs of this stuff and think of how many times I used to go home without ever having gotten in a flight. I just don't think it's wise to encourage any person...least of all the most inexperienced persons to put themselves in that situation. If it happens too many times....the hobby loses a potential future "OF" member.

Speedster,
How do you drill the baffle out of the ST mufflers? The header I wouldn't think would be an issue, but the muffler??
