HP 49 (post # 2)
Being you own this motor...I would like the time of picking your brain a little....
I have the exact same set-up with the cub.....I bought the cub used so I don't know about the engine.......Mine is hard to start.....I have to remove the glow plug and prime to start.....It sounds like a bearing is going out on base leg...it sorta "whistles".....Do you have a better way of running this strange little engine???
My glow plug is in the side of the head...
This thing is really scale...my friends are amazed, as I..
If you know anything about this wonderful little engine, I would appreciate you input.
Thanks..
Daniel

Poor running HP (post # 3)
Well there, where do we begin?????
Mine runs great on YS20/20, I have never run less than 15% nitro through it! The wine you are hearing could be just the gearing itself! It is hard to determine without actually hearing it, however if you are sure it sounds like a bearing, remove the upper gear cover on top of the motor and lubrcate it all with some after run oil. Making sure you get oil down the gear shaft that runs up the motor. This is most likely where the wine is coming from. This motor only needs heavily oiled once! Chances are yours never had that treatment, flood it full, flip the prop a few times and then get the oil out. The first time you run this motor after that treatment it will run real rough. It will clear up though.
I use a OS F plug in it as well. I also pressurize my tank, against recommendations, using the crankcase vent. I have attached a piece of tubing to the other taps and just let them exhaust freely, not much pressure is created there so mine has been fine. I cannot be responsible for your motor if you try this but, this is what works for me!

This little 4 stoke runs really good....I have a big time getting it started......First flight I have to remove glow plug...and squrit a little fuel in it...after that it can be started by hand.....
Any comments?

It sounds to me like it could be a few things, check your pressure.
The instuctions have this motor operating off of tank pressure provided by the tap on the muffler. This tap however provided virtually no pressure at all. I belive it to be the design of the motor. There is also a tap on the head. I have taken both of these, attached a piece of tubing to them and using a zip tie, have strapped them to the muffler letting them vent. No nasty residue is apparent on either line which tells me their is not enough pressure there to export oils thru the tubing. I then pressurized my tank using the vent on the back of the crankcase. This has made this motor run much better.
Make sure your tank is plumbed properly and get it as high as you can.
When starting I advance my throttle about two clicks above the idle trim and it pops right off. To much however and the motor floods easily and will not start at all. YS 20/20 is the best fuel I have found for this motor. It burns it clean and really makes it sing!
