Tower Hobbies .75 - Better Muffler??
Ok, this muffler is crap. Even after I JB Weld together, it still leaks and is loose.
What other muffler can I buy that fits?
Thanks!

JB Weld will not stick after glow fuel has been run the muffler. It is much to your benefit to use high temp silicone to assemble the muffler. Be very careful in the muffler you buy. The tower 75 has a semi tuned muffler and using another muffler might very wel cost you performance

Best thing to do is to drill the holes all the way through the engine and use a #4 screw a couple of lock washers and nylon lock nut. Do this for both sides, and it'll stay tight. You shouldn't need any rtv silicone , but if you need a gasket, you can cut one out of a minilla folder, or even an ordinary playing card. It will look alot neater than red silicone.

For quieter try the GMS 76. It is a direct fit.

These mufflers are always coming apart, and then the stinger spins around. It also causes exhaust to leak out all over the muffler and stain it real bad.
I take 6/32 all thread, and run a long piece all the way through the muffler. Use 2 nuts on the front side, and jam them together with green loctite. That side will never come apart again. Now, on the stinger end, use a nylon lock nut, and some red loctite. It won't come loose in flight, but it can be taken apart with tools.

Does Max make a direct fit for the Tower 75? I am not understanding the solution to keep this muffler together. I would rather buy a one piece, or a better design two piece.

The Tower muffler I have here has the threads in the engine instead of the muffler. Is GMS that way too?

Both GMS and Tower engines come out of the same factory.
Knowing that the GMS fits can reduce noise at fields where noise is an issue.

Thanks all.
Isn't the defect with the Tower muffler, the fact that the long screw that holds all three parts together runs right in front of the exhaust flow? Doesn't metal expand when it's heated up, and that is why these things are always loose?
This is why I want a one piece if I can find.

I had a lot of trouble with my first Tower 75 because I hadn't learned
the tricks. The best bet is to take the new muffler apart and seal the
seams real good with high temp silicon seal, the use two short fat
pop rivets on the seam to keep it from turning. Lock-tite the stock
through bolt....'yer done.

Dave, did you also drill out the threads in the block and put long bolts through, or use the stock muffler/engine bolts?
Thanks,
Ernie

I'm not sure about the whole back pressure thing, but here's the deal on the tower 46 mufflers. My Dad and I both have 1. On mine, it came loose, 6x32 allthread, 2 bolts on each side, clamp it down, it worked. My Dads would rotate (the exhaust thing) so we flew, brought it down, and tightened it while it was hot. Probably not the best for the parts, but it worked. If your trying to JB weld stuff once glow fuel is over it, clean it with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), let it dry, then JB weld it. the isopropyl and paper towels will get the grease off. Now somebody is going to whine about the water in the isopropyl (since it slightly diluted 70% isopropyl), but oh well. That method has never failed me with locktite for holding muffelers on. Isopropyl will aslso clean other stuff, monokote and what not. Then hit it with the JB weld or gasket material.
I would vote for run the engine, get it hot, kill the power and tighten it up real quick. however, be careful not to burn yourself or break it.
Let the flaming begin!

Forget any kind of gasket , just trouble in the long run. Permatex has a high temp gray RTV silacone that matches engine and muffler color when used. You will not see it. Make sure parts surfaces are cleaned with alcohol and let RTV cure for 24 hours so you don't blow it out.
