It doesn't make any difference on the break in.

Both mufflers are of the tuned variety. I doubt if there'll be much performance difference between the OS Power Box muffler and a Tower 46 muffler.

I tested the AX with the stock, Power Box muffler and with the Tower muffler. On a 3D, 12.25-3.75 prop, I gained 800 rpm. Tower mufflers are very popular on OS & other .46 engines.

In the photos, the large round muffler on the left and in front is the Tower. Next to it with the extension in the center is the muffler for a Magnum .52XLS. Third is the GMS .47 Standard muffler, as opposed to the "tuned" muffler, which is the same as the Tower. Both engines are made by the same manufacturer. The last muffler is the OS P-Box. The last photo shows the Tower next to the OS. The Tower is the largest in volume by a good bit. It's not that much longer, but the diameter is larger. It also has no baffle.

As for breaking it in, I would start with the Tower, if you plan to use it regularly.

I own 2 46FXs and 2 46 AXs-on the FXs, I run Tower Mufflers and saw a gain of about 7-800 rpms. On the AXs with the new Pbox muffler I did not see a significant difference, if you remove the baffle in the Pbox. Just my experience thus far. The AX is a great engine, but only slightly better than my FXs.

It seems the P-Box muffler is better than the SF/FX mufflers as far as top end rpm's... Apparently without the baffle they are similar? Is it as loud as the Tower?

Keep in mind there is always the Jett Stream and Ultra Thrust mufflers if you want serious gains...

Profile540, I would use the stock muffler for breakin if it were me because the back pressure is a little higher therefore it will give you more consistent fuel supply for that tight engie and keep her happy. After a few time out at the field then unbolt that stock muffler and set her aside and go for the Tower muffler for more power. After all whats the hurry, the power gain will just be appreciated more. I have noticed that prop size makes a world of difference with the Tower muffler. You have to use a prop that lets the muffler get to the tuned rpm to see the gain. I like the 12X4 or 11x4
