Well, it's not exactly the manual. It is a rush translation and photocopy by Saito of the instructions that I'm sure were printed in a better format later. I get the impression that mine is a very early model. You are right, there isn't an electronic version of the manual anywhere that I've looked. I keep hoping someone can scan theirs for the rest of us.
Mine has some interesting things in it, such as:
*Saito Company ask you to read the instructions carefully and treat this engine with loving care.
*Beware of propeller rpm differ with same sizes and same size of same manufacture.
*If you see visitors at running sight, keep them away backward prior starting.
*Now you may fly out of sky high but recommend you to fly higher for awhile and ensure to have enough altitude in case of engine stoppage.

It is a little funny, but I can understand rushing the manual after the engine is ready to ship. I've seen that often enough. I'm not trying to poke fun at Saito. Besides, after looking at the engine when it was mine makes any translation okay.

I have always wondered how/why someone would go to the effort to make an excellent product and then ruin the effect with a less than satisfactorily translated operator's manual. Not just the Asians, either.

RE: Saito 170 3 Cylinder Radial Questions
Hi guys,
I have posted in the radial engines page, but if you are only following this one, I thought you might like to see my sad little 170 after an inflight failure in my Super Stearman. Got the plane down dead stick okay (thank God) but my engine is not looking too well.
No warning, it just went bang. [&o]

Geeze, looks a lot sadder than it does bad. Sorry to see that kind of problem...so what was your findings on the engine Thunderchild? Maybe running "lean" or somthing contaminated your fuel, or just hard running and age? Real glad to see you got your bird down for sure! [8D]
* #2 Pilot's rule of thumb...an engine only has so much "life" in it. You can use it up all at once, or a little at a time!

Hello Arizonan,
No nothing like that. New engine - max 7 hours running including break in.

RE: Saito 170 3 Cylinder Radial Questions
Hi guys, my first time to post on these forums : ) anyhow I have been reading along as I purchased a new FA-170R3 2 months ago and I want BLW to know that the manual I got with mine appears just the way it was described..a rushed photocopy! I was a bit surprised to see that this was the manual having just looked at the lovely professional looking poster showing the Saito range also in the box. As BLW quoted my manual has all the same cute Japanese translations, put a smile on my face since I lived in Japan for a year. Anyhow I have run mine for it's first hour (now to adjust tappet clearance), and have the following to report:
18% Full synthetic Cool Power Oil
5% nitro
77% methanol
17x6 Xoar Wooden prop
Test stand used, all glow plugs connected to power panel which just copes! (switched on/off during running to determine effect)
Du-Bro 24oz tank mounted on test stand - fluid centreline set at recommended 5mm below carby
High-speed needle 3.5 turns open as recommended in manual
Low-speed needle as factory set
Started after a light prime and 3 flicks, couldnt believe it but she happily idled at 2200RPM on the second run! Probably could go lower but thought I should concentrate on proper running in procedure. I tend to agree the idle mixture seems veeery rich, raw fuel coming out of no2 cylinder even whilst glow power switched on! Quite a joy.
Cheers from Oz

RE: Saito 170 3 Cylinder Radial Questions
Hi guys,
When running the FA-170R3 with the supplied exhaust stubs only (no collector ring etc), does anyone think the exhaust note is a little sharp? I like the sound especially at idle, but am thinking it might be a good idea to fit a collector ring or silicon tubing to cut the edge off the sound (and send all that exhaust out the one spot!)
What are you guys using on your 170R3 exhaust-wise and what effect does it have on the sound?
cheers
