OS55AX from TOWER ..... nice

Just got one of the new OS55AX.
I got it from TOWER. They got it to me in about 3 days. Nice service. Engine looks like a decent "almost 60". I'd say it's as strongly built as any of the previous 60s I've seen. We'll see how it runs Sunday.
One troubling detail.
The TOWER advertisement says in a number of places that the engine comes with a 90degree adapter so you can mount the muffler normally or sideways and you won't have to buy and expensive Pitts style muffler if you buy this one.
Guess what. It didn't come with any adapter. And when I called Tower's Customer Service, they said I'd have to call Hobbico about that. ???? whatever..... Called Hobbico and they basically said they'd check into the problem and call me back with more information. Seems it's clear, they didn't deliver what they said I was buying, but whatever.........

What bothers me is that they're selling the engine before the parts are even available:

Didn't find a muffler angle adapter in my .55AX box either. None is shown in the instruction manual 'Standard Accessories' list.

What was bothersome was that TOWER shifted the problem over to HOBBICO who didn't have a thing to do with the sale, and HOBBICO was at a loss what to do about it.
Heck, if your advertisement says the adapter is included in the price, you ought to make it good. Not take your phone number to "get back to you".
whatever........
I have every confidence that TOWER will make it right.

darock,
Have you owned a OS 61FX before.
Is so would be interested in your comparison of the two, comparing power at mid and full throttle. Also what props you run on the 61 and 55 with what model.
Im leaning towards one myself for a 46 sized pattern plane. I have to make a decision soon as ill be passing by the cheapest shop available to me soon.
Cheers

I just ordered one yesterday. Couldn't resist. I had a $15 credit with them, and applied a $10 discount coupon that came in the Tower Talk flyer. A point to note, in the advertisement in this latest Tower Talk flyer - it says ""It also offers a straight and a 90 degree muffler adaptor - an installation easer also found on the 1.20 AX." Am curious to see if mine arrives with or without. The engine was in stock, but as I live in Canada, the girl said to give approx 2 weeks for delivery (our Canada Customs is notoriously slow). Nice looking engine though, and light!

I'm glad somebody started a post on this. I bought 2 yesterday, I was delivered one from Tower and another came in from my LHS. Going crazy trying to figuare out the 90 degree thing.
It's very clear what they said in the ads. Should be interesting. Dave

BTW, NO 90 degree thing listed in parts!
There are a number of parts not listed in parts. It's a brand new item for Tower's catalog. It's sorta normal that the list be not filled out yet.
chuckle chuckle............
The manual that came with the motor has a fairly complete parts listing. Tower doesn't. Who else would have anything like a list?

It's also interesting that the TOWER ad says that they're selling the engine with two adapters. I can't remember ever opening up an OS box and finding even one adapter with the engine. It's such a leap that OS would suddenly decide to include TWO adapters, that you'd think there had to have been something special negotiated somewhere.
Why would the ad writers have plugged such an unprecedented enticement into the ad if there hadn't been some kind of reason?
BTW, the engine manual does list all the parts with parts numbers. And nowhere is any adapter or extension shown.

BTW yesterday I put the 55AX on my test stand, WOW what an engine! Ran great to say the least. I broke it in with a APC 12X6 prop.
Did it like the instructions said. Ran a full 24 oz through it. Had to turn LS needle in a tad when done for idle but other wise a perfect running engine - on test stand.
The HS needle extension is neat. It's a real "dead" stranded wire, no spring to it. It just sat there, no movement. On a plane maybe different story.

I would really like to know what rpm it can produce on the apc 12-4 and 12.25-3.75. If it is somewhat above 14000 and 13600 respectively it would be an interesting engine in my light 3-d profile, but then again it would cost an arm and a leg here in Norway

Tower has already revised the .55AX Tech Notes to eliminate any reference to a muffler angle adapter (which I remember seeing there). They have done this without showing an 'update' date at the end of the notes.

Well, I honestly believe many people bought this engine expecting to be able to make use of the angle adapter. Are we just supposed to eat this?
