Webra .61 muffler question

I picked up a older Webra .61 and it needs a muffler, It has no mounting bolts but that's a non-issue, I'm a machinist with all this nice machinery to make a strap on adapter to bolt up any muffler I would like, but need to know what muffler to make it bolt up to. What would be a good muffler. I was thinking the muffler from a Tower .75 might be good http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXVH43&P=7 but not sure if it would be a good choice for this engine. Let me know your feedback.

I think that might make a good muffler for that engine...and it just might help the performance like the .46 size muffler helps with those engines?
I just so happen to have a couple of older Webra Speed .61's that need mufflers (hint, hint) so...if you do decide to make an adapter...perhaps you could make and "extra" one for a reasonable fee ? (PM me, if that's a possability)

LOL I'll see what I can do, I've been real busy as of late but I'm hoping I can get use of the machine I need. My Webra is in my toolbox waiting to get a muffler adapter. Should have something in the next week or two, Should not be much trouble to pop out an extra one and I got the specs on the Tower muffler so I can get to work if I get time. I'll let you know. I also need a carb. The one I have is not the original and it's rather beat up with a bent needle valve inlet... and no needle valve, I got this one cheap and got it for the challenge of getting back to life. Any idea what carb would be a good choice for this seeing you have a few and know a little more about what works on these engines. The good side is it has real good compression and the bearings seem smooth.

I was up late last night too...
One of mine has an HP carb that somebody put on it...the other has a Dynamix...and they all use the same 13mm neck (as do the new .50's, .55's and .61's) so there are quite a few options available actually.
I've got some carbs in my collection of "stuff"...let me take a look-see...I might have something that's still servicable...I know I have an older Webra carb, but I think it's from a black head (no guarantees though, cuz some are rather old and I don't know if you'd really want it, ya know?)

Flyboy Dave, Thats some nice work you do there. I thought of drilling and tapping into the flats but didn't really want to cut into the engine if I didn't have too but it looks like a option. I.m hoping to get a little time on the miller tonight. We have one that uses conversational programming so I can make a couple the same if time permits so perhaps proptop might also be able to put a Tower muffler on his too. I just hope this engine runs LOL at least I have this fun of working on it for the $25 I paid for it.

Well it's not pretty but it should do the job, The only thing is I will have to drill out the threads on the muffler and thread them into the mounting piece. only thing left is to get a strap to go around the engine, didn't have much time to do this but I managed to get 2 made (proptop) If I had more time I would have made it look a little better but if it works, Then I'll be happy. I also put the threaded holes at 41mm so it will fit the Tower muffler from the .75. Monday I should have them finished up and if I have time will make them a little more narrow and clean them up. I'll need your adress when I get them finished proptop.

Dauntae,
The newer Webra .61 has the muffler bolt holes drilled and tapped in the exhaust stack, at an identical configuration to MVVS .61-.91 and to OS.61FSR (and their clones).
Due to cost and quality issues, as well as being able to select between five (5) different muffler options, a significant number of OS.61FSR and Webra .61 Speed engine owners selected to get an MVVS muffler/tuned silencer/pipe from me.
The older engines, like your own, have no bolt-holes, so the 'change nothing' option is to get some kind of strap-on muffler, or header...
But if you are, or you know a reasonable machinist, the 4 mm bolt holes must be drilled and tapped 34 mm apart (center-to-center - use a bottoming tap and don't drill as deep as the cylinder sleeve...), for the standard MVVS exhaust (or that from the OEM) to fit unaltered. If you use Imperial fasteners(4-40, 6-32...), you can tap the holes any reasonable size.
E-mail me if you're interested.

Hello again Dar, This particular engine cost me $25 and I don't really know how it will run just yet. I opted for the Tower hobbies muffler because it is only $18 but I really do appriciate the offer. What I'm really doing with this engine is planning to put it on a beat up Pica waco I got for $20 from a auction (rebuilding time) and piecing it all together for a older gentleman in my club that loves flying with my little group and we all have bipes(I have a 40 size Pitts, A Hog bipe and another Pica waco in great shape) so I am really having a little fun piecing this stuff together. The piece in the post above is something I made on my lunch break. If I put the time I could really go to town making this stuff but work has been busy and this particular gentleman would actually rather have it made cheaply than to have his friends spend money because he always feels guilty about accepting gifts. He just doesn't know what we are doing with this yet and will be surprised. He really is a nice old guy and lots of fun to fly with. Well worth the effort. Now I just have to figure out why this Waco came with 3 top wings and no bottom wing DOH (I wish I was joking LOL) Just curious though, How much would the MVVS muffler be just for an option?
Thanks again Dar

Dauntae,
I cannot write any prices in the open forum. E-mail me for specifics.
Let me just say that the normal MVVS .61-.91 muffler is cheaper than the $19 Tower unit; and has the advantage of fitting this engine directly, providing you make the threaded holes in the exhaust stack.
The Tower .61-.75 muffler will not fit and cannot be bolted onto this engine, as the bolt holes are 41 mm apart...
They will be too far apart, to allow safe drilling-tapping in the exhaust stack.
A much better choice would a strap-on muffler, but all of those are much more expensive still.
BTW, shipping from here would cost you less than local...

I have an HP Gold Cup .61 I plan on drilling and tapping the muffler mount holes, if I ever get a round tuit. I have a black muffler to fit I bought from Meccoa, however I am a little dissapointed it is just a simple expansion muffler and the black finish is flatter than the engine finish. I know that the HP and Webra has the same drilling as the old bolt on SF and FSR mufflers, but was not aware that the Rossi was the same size, or did you drill it for the Rossi?

I have one of those old Webra .61 Blackhead engines and mine is missing the muffler too. I've wanted to start this thing up for some time but the neighbors would probably get a little upset at the sound of a .60 size engine with open exhaust.
My Webra has been modified with a standard C/L venturi.
Back in 1969 the Webra was the engine to have in RC pattern events. A very good-looking design.
One of these days I hope to add a Supertigre Bluehead .60 and an OS .60 Goldhead to my .60 shelf.

Dan,
The Webra .61 BlackHead (and maybe also the Silver Line) had a bolt-through muffler attachment arrangement.
The Speed .61 has a bolt-on arrangement, again, like the OS FSR and the MVVS.
The mufflers cannot interchange. Sorry.

Dauntae...that came out pretty good![8D]
You mentioned something about drilling out the threads on the muffler? Mine doesn't have any threads?
I like it...and think it looks fine just the way it is...[sm=thumbup.gif]
You will have a PM very shortly

Well I finally got a chance to finish them up (proptop I sent you a PM) took a couple of hose clamps to strap it on the engine and It's all set to go. I still have not decided what to do on the muffler but I think I may end up getting one from you DarZeelon but it will be in a few weeks. There are other things taking up my time as of late so this preoject will be on the back burner for a little while.

Paul,
I'll keep an eye out for a K&B muffler. There used to be an annual R/C garage sale held at the Orlando fair grounds once a year maybe I can find one there.

Dan, Paul,
The K&B/HB .61 muffler would not fit the Webra Speed.
Since the discussed engine is the Webra Speed; not the BlackHead/Silver Line, that muffler will not be usable.
