RE:Saito 150 problems?
The engine was broke in on the test stand last year.I just installed it inverted in a Super Stearman with a cline regulator.I couldn't get it to go rich with 5 or 6 turns out with the HS needle. It didn't seen to build pressure in the tank very well.I bypassed the cline with the same results.I tried another fuel tank with the same results.I pulled the engine and put it on the test stand.
My results
1.Max rpm with a 16/8 apc prop was 9000 rpm.
2.I then richened it up for 8600 rpm.I was 5 1/2 turns out
3.The most it would drop was 8000rpm no matter how far I turned it out.
I thought it should go richer then this but maybe not.
4.One last thing I did notice was fuel leaking from around the rubber seals at the base of the push rods.
Is this normal?
Thank You

Both my 150s run between 3 and 3.5 turns out on the main NV on 15% nitro fuel. You might have dirt or some other obstruction in the carb if you can't get it to richen up down past 8600rpm. I'd take it apart and check. Regarding leaks around the pushrod tube, whaddy' a expect dude? It's a Saito - they leak!
Seriously - they do......

Since the regulator reads the demand at the spraybar it won't supply fuel much beyond what the engine can use. 200 rpm rich of peak is plenty when using the Cline because the engine won't go lean as the fuel level goes down. It looks like your crankcase vent is blocked or the line on it is excessively long causing oil to come out around the front bearing. I have about 15 Saitos and leaking is not normal.

Luvbipes,
It would richen up to 8000rpm.I'
Hobbsy,
How long is too long? It runs down and out the bottom of the cowl. This engine is new and wonder if that has anything to do with it.I took the cline off for the time being.

Well Scratch,
The LS was set fine.I still have a problem.Today the HS didn't respond as it should. Also I notice the front bearing is leaking like crazy. This engine gets very wet.I boxed it and sent it in.Tired of messing with it.
