Default MDS 2.18 and MOKI 2.10 NOT the same!!

I have been posting to the forum questions about sources for parts for my MDS 2.18 engine. Two Member reply posts stated that, Quote "anything that fits the MOKI 2.10 will fit the MDS 2.18" and "...the MOKI 2.10 backplate that is a direct bolt on (to the MDS 2.18)"

Well sorry but thats not the case. Following those instructions I orderd a MOKI 2.10 backplate engine mount from JUST ENGINES in England. Well the part came today and, guess what? NOPE. Won't fit. It's like trying to mount a Ford transmission bellhousing on a Chrysler engine. They just don't go together.

So I guess I have a homeless Moki Radial engine Mount. Anyone know where to find a 'REAL' MDS Radial engine mount for my 2.10?

Try the UK agent, Ripmax.

They no longer carry the MDS line of engines, but have many parts in stock for MDS:

www.ripmax.com

I understand the radial mount interchange compatibility is between large ST's and large Mark/Moki's, NOT MDS's and Mark/Moki's

Hi fiery,

thanks for the reply.

I did contact Ripmax. They forwarded my emails and fax and had two U.K. retail suppliers contact me. Neither supplier could supply a Backplate mount. The Ripmax website does not list the MDS 2.18 Backplate mount on the website, though they do list other MDS parts.

"Just Engines" in the UK ws able to get some other spare replacement parts for the big MDS through Ripmax for me.

I even emailed the manufacturer in Russia, No response.

Apparently the motor mount on the MDS 218 in the first post is a real MDS 218 mount.

The Moki mount looks completely different and is a combination mount-backplate.

Yes,

the photo you posted is the MOKI 2.10 backplate radial firewall mount. That is the item I have just taken delivery on from JUST ENGINES in England. It was not cheap. $42.20 plus $14.70 international shipping []. Well, maybe someday I'll find a modeler who needs it...

OK here is a way of making your own.

Get a piece of aircraft quality hard dural [UK SPEC HT 40 or better]. Mark the position of the 4 backplate screws and drill to size. Remove the existing back screws and get some good quality HT longer ones and 8 nuts. Assemble like this run one nut up to the head of the screw, next comes the drilled plate and another nut. Repeat 3 times. Now screw the bolts into the usual back plate holes till they bottom out. Tighten the nut up against the backplate then tighten the other nut against the dural plate. I recomend the use of loctite.

Before you do all of this drill 4 more holes for your bulkhead mounting screws.

My trusty MDS 148 has been hanging off a funfly bulkhead this way for 6 or 7 years.

Works for me.

Hi J.D.,

the aluminum plate set up you describe sounds workable. I am mulling your suggestion over right now, along with one I got in a private email from another contributor. Thanks for taking the time to write. It is a good solution....

The gas engine guys use this type of mount all the time. For your engine a 1/8" to 3/16 plate of 6061, 2024, or 7075 T3 or T6 drilled for the engine backplate screws and using 4 standoffs at the corners of whatever length needed to position the engine wherever needed. Light weight, simple, and sturdy.
