Default Best engine for GP P-51 ARF

What engine would give me great speed and all around performance without a tuned pipe, as I will use a pitts muffler. But still balance within reason, not too much lead.
Not the jett line of engine because of price. thinking .60 size.
was going to use new O.S. .50sx but the price is the same as there fx .61

any ideas?

Thank you!

Try the Irvine 53! Excellent engine, good price (try D&L Designs in Tucson AZ) and they are not very loud.

I would personally go with the .50 sx over the .61 fx. The .61 weighs almost 6 oz. more than the .50 and is only slightly more powerful. Go with the .50 an 11x8 prop and no lead, you will have all the speed you could want.

Qustion: What's the first thing that comes to mind when someone says "warbird"?

Answer: The roar of a powerful engine! You must not discount a .70 sized stroker. It would be a huge performance improvement over a .46 engine.

I am flying the kit version with a Saito 91 inverted with a 14x8 Zinger wood prop. Same dimensions as the the 70 4c engines. Runs great. Very fast. Looks best on low passes.

Yes but since I'm 15 I dont have the money for a 4 stroke

I have 4 strokes on other planes and love them but I Just dont have the money.

Thinking about the .50sx with pitts muffler now because the .61fx would weight to much.

The stupid .50sx with pitts is only about 40$ cheaper then the .91 saito four stroke!!

What about the mvvs .49 with mini tuned pipe?
Herd this engine is a screamer!
would it fit in the cowl with the pipe coming out the side?

Which one would be better rear or side exhaust with tuned pipe for fitting on my plane?
Also horizontal or inverted mounting?

Of these 2 veriables wich one would work the best?( inverted with rear exhaust, horizontal with side exhaust etc.)
Best thing 139.99!!

Thank you!

I just broke in and flew an MVVS .49 w/minipipe this weekend. Put five tanks through it on the test stand and two in the air. I had one deadstick landing on the first "air" tank - the supplied plug blew out. Not surprising.

Power is impressive. I was getting 13900 with a 10x7 prop during breakin (second tank!). With 5% fuel! I haven't tached it since, but it has to be turning >14K now. I did try it with an 11x7 prop (just happened to have one sitting in the tool tray) - it turned about 12000 but wasn't real happy about it as the minipipe is tuned for 15K.

Noise is impressive. If your field has noise restrictions, this combination may not be for you.

The carb works well. Mine does seem to be a bit "sticky" and would jam at low - mid throttle settings. I'm not sure whether its a machining issue or a heat issue. I pulled the carb apart and polished the surfaces - this helped.

In short, the engine performs well, is inexpensive and will get better with use.

BUT!! I wouldn't put it on a warbird. Just the thought of a tuned pipe hanging off the side... Ugh.

Save your money and put a good .60 - .70-sized four stroke on it. Keep an eye on the swapshop - I've seen OS .70 engines in good shape being sold for under $150...

Okay my dad agred to put in some money. (early birthday presant. )

Wich would be better the saito .72 .80 or .91

The .72 is the same price as the .80 224.99.
The .91 is 239.99
The .80 is 19 oz the .91 is 19.6 oz
where the .72 is 16.6 oz
I guess that is due to the 72 is aac, wich is lighter than the abc .80. the .91 is aac

so I might as well go with the .91 since it is only .6 oz heavier

Any suggestions?
