I'm new to running a YS 45 and so far all I can say is WOW! I love the throttle response and how easy it is to run.
I tested it on my stand over the weekend with the following results. ACP 12.25 x 3.75, 20/20 fuel, Macs muffled pipe and header, 13,800 rpm. Is this reasonable performance for the 45?
Just thought I would share my experience.
Thanks,
Ric

Hideho and welcome to the world of YS's.
Gotta love em'.
OK, so the first thing one realizes about YS's is that like a wee smaller prop. 11X4 or 5 APC depending on your plane, like a funfly.
11X6 or 7 for a sport aero. 8 for speed.....
They like to spin up quicker than most. Stay away from the 12's on the YS 45's...I have a few of them, BTW.

Other than the Dub Jetts motors I think the YS-45 is the best performing 45 out there... The YS-45 and the Irvine 53 are awesome**
Mike- Nice new avitar... I run the YS with a 10x 7 on my Lanier F-4, do you think I should try an 11"er? The 9X9 was just frightening...

I think you can get more out of your YS .45 than you are currently seeing. I've seen several turn 11X6's at 15K RPM on 10% Cool Power. You didn't specify which plug you are using or if you are running a stock length header whether it be the pre-tuned system of the full length header. In either case, my first though is you can shorten the header and get even more power out of the engine.

I run my 45's with a K&B HP plug and 10x8 for speed. They turn in the hi 14k on YS 20/20 fuel.
with the 12.25 x 3.75 sounds like you are going to do some 3d with it. I would highly recommend a 12 x 4w apc. This prop really stabilizes the hover! My first 45 is still running strong after 8 years.

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to mention I'm using an OS #8 plug and I have trimmed about 1" off of the Macs header (standard length). I may have to play with the header some more.
Thanks again,
Ric

Keep cutting the header in 1/4" increments until you see a drop in RPM instead of a gain. Then, back the pipe back out that 1/4" and you are there. Keep in mind this length will change if you change anything such as plug, fuel, prop, etc. Even the weather can affect this. Because of this, most people cut until they see the engine starting to get peaky, then stop instead of going for the very last R's. With this approach, you can maintain pipe length over most conditions.

Yep, MAC's is a great and easy way to go! They used to make a pretuned set for the YS-45 but discontinued it when the 45 went away. Now that the 45 is back, call them and see if they started making it again.
The last time i went into Sheldon's Hobbies in San Jose, CA. They had 1 on the shelf. Try calling them also!
Good Luck.

hi guys, I ran my 45 with a macs tuned this weekend:
Wildcat 20/20
OS #8
APC 11-7
12,700 static RPM
makes the ultra stick go pretty good
Have a question though, anyone making this engine run well on a stock pipe? If so, how are you doing it? I want to install it in a 46 sized Sukhoi without the big long tuned pipe.
Thanks,
WOOD

Shorten the pipe and you'll get even better performance.
Your engine will run well on a muffler, but it really needs a pipe to come alive. I would do what I could to bury the header and pipe in your Sukhoi if at all possible. Aside from the benefits of the YS fuel delivery, there is no real benefit of running this engine compared to other .45's without the pipe.
just my .02,
John

I think the ys 45 is still stronger, than say a os 46fx, because they both were in the air and the ys was for sure stronger.
I just need to tune it up so it will run better o the stock pipe, and was wondering if anyone has done this. I think it will be too "peaky" on the Sukhoi for the type of flying I want to do with it. I have run the tuned pipe with this engine on my ultra stick, lots of power and speed. I like the motor, I just want to use it without the tuned pipe.

Yes, it is stronger than an OS 46FX. One was designed as a sport engine, the other competition. That said, compare the port timings and I think you will find the timings used in the YS are more in-line with those of high performance piped engine. They run fine without a pipe, but won't show their full potential in that configuration. You might try a hotter plug to get more on the muffler, but I seriously doubt it's going to be a big difference over what you see now.

Thanks for the input, I'll try a hotter plug, which one do you recommend? I had a OS #8, then tried a fox long with idle bar. It seemed to be stronger with the idle bar.
I just got back from the hobby shop with another new ys 63, so that should solve my problems for now
I just like to tinker with things, like trying to get the 45 to run smoothly on the stock pipe. the power output isn't really a concern for me because right now I don't have any plans for the engine. It is true though, this engine turns into a missile when I put the macs tuned pipe on it.
Thanks,
WOOD

The YS 45 looks larger and heavier than the OS 46. Does it's increase in performance really make up for this?
Wood, were you able to get the Ultra Stick to balance with the 45???
Thanks !

Ernie,
No problems balancing the airplane at all with the ys 45, here are the specs on the 45 from the http://www.ysperformance.com/ web site:
RPM Range: 2,000 to 18,000 RPM
Prop Sizes: 9 X 8 to 11 X 7
Weight: 14.2 oz.
1.5 hp with stock pipe (per e-mail from ys performance)
I'm guessing this is the weight without muffler, as they didn't come with one. The ys manual says the engine was designed for a tuned pipe.
OS 46 FX specs from OS http://www.osengines.com/engines/fx.html
46 FX
(2,000-17,000
1.59hp @ 16,000
13.2 OZ
10.5x6, 11x6-7, 12x6-7
I'm also guessing that this is without the muffler. And as you can see the specs are real close, but both were in the air on Sunday and the YS was clearly stronger, a comment from the guy who had the OS 46.
In short, the YS makes up for what little extra weight you carry, it is a very strong engine.

Thanks for the info Wood. You cleared up something I have been wondering about for a long time. The YS 45 does look big and heavy but as you say, it isn't. The same goes for my Saito 72 which weighs no more than a 46 FX.
