good morning,
what i'm asking is, what is an equivalent sized 4 stroke powerplant to replace an evolution .46nt.? this will be going in either a pulse xt or a hangar 9 tango.. looking for the same size in power, engine cc's i know will be different.
this is just for fun flying and nothing serious other then wanting the torque and sound to match the theme of the plane itself...
thanks in adv.

I think the Magnum 61 fs would be about right. It will weigh almost exactly the same as your 46 too. For major power and still light weight, Saito 82, but it will be more power than you asked for

i could live with that, more power, would grow into wanting that anyway. thanks for that. i noticed that some 4 strokes seel the exhaust seperately. if this is the case what is a nominal pipe to put on it.?
thanks again....

If you want same power go for a OS56 or Saito 56. If you can live with more power
go for a YS63, Saito 82 or OS70. I dont understand your question about sealing the exhaust on 4-strokes?

excuse that,
i meant (sell not seel) seperately.. in my shopping, i've noticed that some engine selections don't include an exhaust pipe. in either plane mentioned above, they would be mounted upright. is there a common pipe or system that the masses prefer.???
thanks again.

The fourstrokes that I mentioned usually come with a muffler. If it is not included then I would buy the stock muffler for them because it is small and quiet. I would try to raise the fuel tank 1/2" or so because it usually is to low for a uprighted fourstrokes in most planes. It might works just great without the modification but incase there is a leaning situation " usually at the lower rmp range" then you you what to look for.

I`ve never seen a fourstroke for sale without the muffler. I guess on some pictures in the adds they are just not shown (the muffler that is)

I think a 56 sized four stroke will have a little less power than a 2 stroke 46. A 72 4 stroke will probably match up better but come out a bit heavier.

I have owned an Evo .46NT and several other 2-stroke .46s. I also owned a Magnum .61FS. It is in no way up to the power of a .46. I presently own a Saito .56 and it is more like a good .32 in pulling power.
I don't own a Saito .82, but my Saito .72 is more of an equivalent to a .46. A .46 2-stroke powered plane would be faster, but the Saito .72 would have more lugging power. The Saito .72 is also in the same weight category as a .46. The OS and Magnum .70s are heavier. Saito .72: 18.1 oz, OS .46AX: 17.2 oz. The Mag & OS .70 are in the 21-22 oz range.

I've got a H9 Pulse XT with a Saito 82 in it. That is a GREAT combination, but it does have more power than "just enough". I found that I have to use a smaller prop than I would like, because of ground clearance concerns, but a 13 x 8 works perfectly. That engine balances the Pulse well too.
The ONLY problem I found was getting the engine close enough to the firewall, and the throttle was a little more difficult to connect than a 2 stroke. Both are easily dealt with though.

The new Thunder Tiger F-75s is about the same weight as your Evo .46NT and should provide really good performance. It's almost the exact same weight as the Saito .72 but it sells for $169.99 at www.thundertiger4u.com They'll even ship it at no charge.

thanks ed , everyone,
pricing and looking at the above mentioned now. can someone tell me how they've routed the control rod to the carb being that it's on the opposite side then our standard 2 strokes.? other then mounting the engine upside down, has anyone moved their servo over and drilled the firewall.?
lastly; will i continue to run the same fuel in it as my evo.46.?
thanks in adv...

First of all the four strokes 50 and up can have the carb reversed. The throttle lever can be on either side.
Yes I've moved many throttle control rod assemblies to the other side of the plane.
The throttle rod is usually very close to the firewall. Extend the throttle rod out in a horseshoe shape to come back to the throttle lever from the front side?

One thing I have noticed with the same plane ( seagull PC 9 ) . mine with a 70 os 4 stroke and a club member 45 supertigre is that his 45 would leave mine for dead. I also have a 82 saito on a 40 size stick and have had a 52 supertigre on it and the 2 stroke is faster again. These are just my observation so please dont shoot me [:-] Cheers the pope

The pulse is a fast plane touted as a trainer. Did I mention it is fast. The Magnum 70 would be a great power and money choice.

This last week I changed out an OS 46FX to a Saito .56 in my Pulse XT. Like mentioned above it is TIGHT on the firewall. To get the throttle linkage to work I took an extra servo arm and screwed it to the side of the motor mount close to were the carb used to be located. Then ran a wire from that arm back to the new carb location. (bell crank system). Works like a champ. The cowl also looked like it was cut out just for the Saito. By far the 46fx was a lot faster, but the four stroke .56 made the flight a lot more relaxing and fun. It still climbs out of sight, can hold a hover but cannot pull up and out of it. The flight time went from a comfortable 8 minutes(two stroke) to a 13 minute (four stroke) flight with fuel to spare.
