Default OS 120AX vs YS 110 & Saito 150

How would a OS 120AX compare in 3D performance against a YS110 or a Saito 150 - swinging a 17x6 APC or lighter wood prop on a Extreme Flight 68" YAK54?

Im in the verge of buying a new engine (120AX) and would like to know the throttle response performance of 120AX (stock muffler) against YS110 and Saito150. Is this a logical comparison?

My aim is to keep the airframe as light as possible and get best performance using low nitro fuel with efficiency and perfect reliability.

Power is almost about the same for all these three engines. I know my Saito180 and OS120 run happily on 5-10% nitro but I run 10% in everything I have. I think the YS needs atleast 10% nitro to perform well. One clubmate is running his YS91 on 10% nitro and it runs awesome and idles low.

The Y-S 110 and Saito 150 have a lot more torque but they have more weight also.

I run 10% on everything aswell (Saito 100-125 Os56a 46ax...). But I also would like to give 5% a try.

I have considered that - being 4 stroke brings the advantage of throttle response. But is it THAT much different than a same size (more powerfull) 2 stroke?

I dont know about the throttle response on the OS120AX for 3D. I run mine on a quiet pipe for speed turning a APC 14x12 and it been great. But there are others using it for 3D hope they response. One thing I know is a OS-F fourstroke glow plug improves the throttle response a whole lot on large twostroke. Just make sure you have both needles set up slightly rich with good smoke.

A friend uses a OS 120AX on a UCD60. There is no problem with throttle response.

Im planning to use F plugs right-away after the breif break-in anyway.
Im just hoping the spool up of 120AX with a 17x6 is nearly as fast as the spool up of saito 150 with a 17x6. Can this be verified in any way?
Any 120AX 3D performers???

w8ye - do you know what prop ur friend uses on his UCD60?

I have a 120 ax in my Harrier 100 3d. I did have a Saito 120 but it just was not enough power and the engine was to heavy. I put the 120 ax on it and it is a perfect fit. Throttle response is unreal. I am also running 10% nitro and a 17x6 APC. Hovers at less than 1/2 throttle and pullout of any trouble without hesitation. I am a 120 ax flyer forever.

I can't wait to compare my new 1.10S against my normall 1.10. The S model is siad to have about 15-20% more power. The 1.10S is going in my Funtana X100.

brewski - thats good to hear (tho I think you meant harrier 90 3D)

motorman - I know the "old" YS110 - Its pretty strong, but I dont think the new version with the reg on the pushrods wont be that much powerfull than the original, although please let us know if theres any difference between them.

what is the muffler weight of the YS110 - anyone weighed it?

Liquid,
The S model also employs the crankshaft ring the 1.40L had, and the same thing the 1.60 and 1.70 DZ use to really raise the boost of the engine. Go to Cental Hobbies website and check out the parts list. The ring seals the crank off at the counter weight to force the boost into the airchamber, the old 1.10 did not employ this. I have been told by a few people that it is 300-400+ rpm stronger on the top end, and quite a bit gruntier down low. How come you did not add the 1.40 for comparison, that would come out on top for sure. Part # 18 from the parts diagram is only in the S model. There are quite a few changes between the two, the crankcase and cylinder have really been beefed up too, the color of the new cylinder makes me think they made it out of magnesium. It should be one heck of a performer.

Yeah, it is a 90 but the box says 100 for whatever reason. Maybe because it is rated for up to a 100 2 stroke. Either way the ax is a stud.

Motorman - thats good news indeed.! So its official now that its gona be much stronger than saito 150

I havent included the YS140 because there is no logic of using such a strong engine on a plane that weigh less than 9lbs AUW. ( and also for the sake of using low nitro fuel)

I am pretty comfident the new S model will be really competitive with any of the 2 strokes in that CI range. I am planning on installing the S model in my Funtana X100 with a APC 17-4W, and the mighty 1.40 in my Aero Works 72" Yak with a 17-8.
