Default Help with engine selection

Hello all,

I'm currently in the process of completing a Warbird (ME-109). Finish weight will be 7 to 7-1/2 lbs (60inch Wing span). I'm wondering which four stroke will best suit this application. I'm not a 3D Flier, and I don't particularly care about the "Unlimited Vertical" I've seen referenced in some posts, although some vertical is necessary (it is a plane after all). The manufacturer calls for a .40 to .46 two stroke or a .70 four stroke. Anyone that can tell me if the Saito .62 four stroke would fly this size and weight well, or am I better off just getting the .70 and managing the throttle more? Has anyone flown a Saito .62 in a plane this size/weight? If so, how did it perform?

Thanks for any input.

At 7 1/2 pounds and your desire of spritely performance you should go with the Saito 82. It has the same mounting bolt pattern as the Saito 62. The Saito 82 weighs less than a OS or Magnum 70.

I agree with w8ye you should get the larger engine for a plane that weighs that much. I am flying a Saito 62 in a plane that weighs 5lbs and it has good power for pulling that weight, and would probably do well up to 6lbs depending on the type of flying you do.

Ok, I looked (read scoured) around the web (third night in a row) and found a review of a P-51 with the same finish weight as mine with a Saito 82 in it. Guy loved the engine in the 7-1/2 pounder and said it flew excellent at half throttle (and could take off in 20 feet). Guess the board members have my trust now as the first question I asked I wasn't led estray. Thanks for the input folks =)

I agree too. I had a plane of about the same weight with a .72 on it. It had good power, but always needed just a bit more to be perfect. I never put my .82 on it.

Would you have noticed much of a difference if you had? Just asking your opinion. Not a trick question. <G>

The .82 is supposed to put out 20% more power, so I think I would have. That's about all I thought it needed at the time.
