Boring Engines or The Easy Way Out...
My engines are boring.
I’ve never owned a four stroke model engine, an ABC, ABL, ABN or anything other than plain vanilla ringed…and an occasional lapped Fox or Enya control line engine. (I did own a couple Cox engines as a kid)
I never get to post for help in getting them to run correctly.
I only get to buy one type of fuel and it always has castor oil in it.
I only own three different sizes, a couple 40’s 61’s and a few 80’s.
The same glow plug that I buy will work in all of them.
Most of the propellers I buy will work on any of the three and if I nick a prop I can usually trim it down and re-ballance it because they’re all made of wood…
I never get say “Schnuerle” when talking about my own engines because all my pistons have baffles…
I don’t get to fool around with pumps, fuel regulators or check valves.
Never get to lap valves, adjust lash or re-plum a breather.
Not that I haven’t been tempted to purchase something “new”, I just read about the various problems that people have with the latest and greatest and get gun shy and revert back to what I know.
What I need is a challenge, a real PITA engine that will have me hunched over my model for hours on end. Something finicky, something I can complain about.
Any suggestions?

Try an old series 1 OS Pet.
They were the hardest to start, noisiest most cantankerous engine I ever had.
Cast-iron baffled piston with loop scavenging.
Oh hang on -- you've probably already got one :-)

Mate
You don't know what you're missing
I think you should get rid of all that "junk" of yours, go and get something like the latest YS or maybe a supercharged OS, Pull it apart to see how it works, assemble it "as best you can think of", change all the needle settings then start trying to make it fly.
You should get hours of fun meddling that way and you won't have to do any of that pesky flying stuff.
BTW - I do have some of the more complicated engines, including YS and have great success with them but I am a "Set and forget" kind of owner.
I saw in a post somewhere recently a quote by one of our revered engine specialists about why he bought a particular engine that regularly gave him difficulties - he said something along the lines of "Because making your engines run is a hobby al by itself"
GREAT THREAD BTW -I'll get the popcorn and beer out to see if anyoneputs in there $0.02

You want something to fuss over for days on end?
Get you a nice Tower .46 engine and you will be happy for quite a while!

Keep in mind you're reading a forum for people to help each other solve problems or just get some good instructions about an engine they are having trouble with. The other kajillion or so modelers who are having no problems don't all post to say so! If you are flying control line and dont have a LA 46, you missed the boat! If you fly RC and can't get a Tower 46 to work, you should take up rubber-powered airplanes! The best engines of all time are available TODAY. Nostalgia not withstanding of course.

After you buy a new one, whatever you do, don't read the manual! This should keep you guessing for quite some time

I would suggest your choice of either the GMS 1.20 2-stroke or the Evolution 1.00 NX 2-stroke. Either one of these should be a fine choice to provide the excitement that you're looking for.

If I didn`t have any engines to fiddle with I would be bored to death, we have ALOT of rain and wind around here eliminating beeing airborne for weeks at a time. I`m happy to adjust valves, grind and polish stuff, and even dissassemble my YS 110 into atoms and then rebuild it, yes it still runs great, they are not much more complicated than a normal fourstroke only some extra parts.

I was just horsing around…smiles
I’ve had a couple newer engines and got rid of them and went back to the older stuff, I think the older stuff is made better.
I work as a machinist and I just can’t get used to the “Controlled Galling” of the newer engines. I understand the science but it just doesn’t give me a warm fuzzy feeling. When it goes bad (and it seams to happen a lot) you throw half the engine away and start over. There is no fixing it. The engine manufactures realize that…
The four strokes have a purpose and I really like them, I just haven’t found a reason to use a heavier engine that makes less power in any of the models that “I” build.
I’ve got some HB engines and some of the older OS MAX H series engines. Mufflers are the most difficult parts to find for the OS engines as they use the 704 strap on mufflers.
I recently bought a HB .61 PDP Blitz chrom that is supposed to be timed for a tuned pipe so I’m going to put myself through that experience. The worst thing that can happen is I’ll have to put the muffler back on it as it runs great the way it is.
In an effort to increase the performance of the engines I own I’m trying to build lighter. Taking a little more time selecting wood, building up control surfaces, etc.
I also think that by flying on the wing and not the propeller I’ve become a better flyer. By using older less finicky engines I’m able to get to the bottom of the fuel can. If you know what I mean…
My models seam to last longer as well.
Just my opinion…

Besides into the ground...
I have nothing but respect for those guys.
Do some math and try and figure out how many strands of rubber it takes to spin a 12 inch folding prop that you carved yourself out of balsa wood.
The amount of patience required to make rubber powered models work is way beyond my skill set.
It's an art form.

Check out the hi performance russian engine at a bargain price thread. Thats as good of a place as I can think of to get a cheap engine or two to work on.

If you want a real RUBE GOLDBERG engine, get a supercharged OS 120. I think they have more parts than my ford taurus engine.
