Some people have claimed Marvel Mystery Oil causes rust...
Well, judge for yourself. This is a Como 40 engine that I disassembled and put into a coffee can and covered the steel parts with straight MMO back in 1978!
I just now pulled the parts out and have them cooking in a crockpot of anti-freeze. But as you can see, there is no rust. So much for rumors.........
Oh, and remember when a 1 pound can of coffee was actually one pound?
Not anymore! Same can, but 13 or even as little as 11 ounces. [:@]

Good post. I've used the oil with no problems. I recently took out a four stroke that was stored with the oil and all was well.

Seriously though, I don't think I've ever seen an engine rust that bad before.

I don't want to side track this thread but I won it on *bay, $9.99. I bid for the nice Edson aluminum mount and got the engine to boot. I glass bead blasted the mount and it came out real nice.
The engine was locked up solid. I pulled the back plate off and it was a blob of rust. This engine is somewhat of a novelty in that the piston is chrome plated and the cylinder has no liner.
Leave it to the Americans to try and think outside the box.......
Surprisingly the piston/liner/cylinder is perfect. It shows hardly any wear at all. I managed to clean up the crank and will try and resurrect it.

I think chances are good that engine will run again. When you first posted the pictures of the engine I was thinking about posting "I could save that engine!" but I thought you and most everyone would think I was full of it!
I am glad to see you think otherwise.

The problem with Marvel Mystery Oil is that in long term open air storage it dries to hard red crud. I understand this is not a problem with their air tool oil. If you use Rislone, you can throw the engine in a drawer, pull it out 20 years later and go fly, no problem. Been there, done that.

After a day in the antifreeze the engine was cleaner than before. However, I am still not very impressed with the "crockpot method" versus cold parts dip.
Anyway, here are the parts after removing them from the antifreeze and then scrubbing them with a toothbrush in a bucket of solvent. Then I assembled the engine.
The carb was still stuck. I had to use a butane torch to heat up the carb body in order to remove the barrel. Afterward I cleaned up the parts and reassembled the carb.
I even located the stock muffler later. I didn't mess with the crockpot. 10 minutes in cold parts dip and it came out clean and bright.
Only problem I have, is I lost the carb retaining nut. Otherwise I would have put this engine on the test stand today and ran it for the first time in 30 years. [8D]
MMO kept this engines parts in good shape and none of the steel was rusty.

Kmot, what are you using to cold dip your parts? I've heard that Berrymans Chem Tool works pretty well. I'm soaking "Crusty" in antifreeze right now. The K&B was missing the needle valve and there is no muffler so I'll have to hunt down some parts before I can give it a try.
The engine looks great.

I use McKays. Parts dip, carb cleaner. I think it's all the same stuff:

Causes rust? That's the first I've heard that.
WD-40, applied as a lubricant, will result in rust on the linkage to which it was applied. Takes a few weeks, but the WD-40 goes away and leaves a clean, unprotected surface. It's not a lubricant, it's for Water Displacement. (There's a clone, CRC, was available in the '80s, same story.)
Never heard that about MMO.
Cheers,
Dave Olson

Yes, I have read on some posts that some guys claimed that using MMO as an after run oil caused their bearings to rust and warned people not to use it. If you want to look for it, the threads about using ARO is where I saw it.

It's been my experience that most rumors, and/or the prolific Spread of Misinformation, is a result of those that either haven't a clue what they're talking about, not actually doing what they say they're doing, the conclusion came as a result of too much beer or crack, or was "heard" on the proverbial "grapevine" ........ none of which counts for much in the real world.

RE: Some people have claimed Marvel Mystery Oil causes rust...
The issue is not that MMO causes rust, far from it. The issue is people who use afterrun oil using any peroleum product that will not mix with the fuel. Especially if they use just a few drops. Oil is lighter than water so it can trap existing water drops between the oil and the part causeing rust. This is not the case if you wipe off parts and drop them in a jug of oil. But if you have raw fuel in the engine it will likely have some moisture in the fuel and the oil could float on top of it trapping the moisture. Hopefully the oil in the fuel will protect that, but not allways.
In fact for long term storrage in this manner MMO is an overkill. Mineral spirits is all you need for that kind of storage. Provided it is caped so it will not evaporate, or topped off now and then.

Some report rust even when using ARO (when I refer to ARO I mean Air tool oil, Rislone, ATF, The hobby shop stuff, etc.). Many also speak of using "a few drops of ARO". I rather suspect that a lot of folks, when they use an after run oil simply do not use enough.
