Default OS 200 for Pattern?

Just wondering if anyone has had success with the OS 200 4c in a Pattern plane. I waited for this engine to become available ever since I heard about it but then what happened was a little bit disappoinitng. It looks like the carbureted versions of this engine are targetted at the scale guys and the power output is not comparable to the (smaller) YS 160 or 170. Is the pumped version more powerful than the non-pumped version? I'm trying to avoid going to the YS camp next year (I'm building 2 new airplanes). I've been flying OS engines for over ten years and I'm currently running OS 160 2-strokes in my Pattern planes. I'd like to use the 200 if at all possible. I find it hard to believe that OS doesn't offer an engine that can compete with YS. Come on, a hotter cam, bigger carb, bigger valves...

I am pretty sure that the Japan team at the F3A championship here in Argentina flew with the OS 200. One of their guys finished 3rd.

Everyone else was flying YS or electric.

Yeah that's the fuel-injected version. Jason Shulman had one of the early ones when I saw him at the Apopka contest in 2006 but he was still sorting out some minor problems with it. The fact that he's running YS (still) and electric now tells me that he never got it working to his satisfaction. I didn't want to bother him at the NATs this year because he seemed kinda busy. LOL
I'm more interested in the carbureted versions. There is a new one with a pump. I'm trying to find out if the pumped version has bigger valves and a larger carb. so that it might make a little more power. Somebody moved my post from the OS support forum to here. That's OK, I just hope someone can answer my question. I really want to try this engine but I don't want to run a lame experiment on my new airplanes. If someone has prop vs. RPM figures with the OS 200 FS-P that would be very helpful.
I came across a review and the test motor only spun a Top-Flite 18x10 @ 6890 RPM. Not enough. My 160 Fx will spin an APC 18.1 x 10 @ 8200 RPM.

Why beat your heads against the wall? YS has been proven to be the best for serious pattern work.

Many years ago, I went through a similar phase of trying to use OS for pattern. Folks, they just weren't up to the task. Rossi and YS did it much better, if you could manage to get your hands on an engine.

The "best" OS engines for pattern were the SF/RF 10cc engines and then the Hanno Special engines. However, by that time the 20cc YS four-stroke ruled as King. Larger iterations still do.

hello ed,

perhaps you're right but i think os with os 200 FS pump could be a nice engine in a pattern F3A. Sure, i have an ys 140, very nice engine but, we can try other thing no ?

regards

Of course you can. By all means. I wish you the best of luck. It won't be difficult to have much better luck than I had.
