I'ts a strange linkage, but I used to repair and align machines to facet gemstones. One of my customers was in Australia and told me about a guy he knew that was making 9cyl P&W Wasp Jr engines, 1/6 scale. That really caught my attention and soon, I had great plans to build one and to build a steel tube framed Beach stager wing to fly it. That was about four years back. I have the plans for the P&W Wasp Jr. and a couple parts done in CAD and ready to machine. The plane fuselage was extracted from drawings from the San Diego Aerospace Meseum. Done in CAD drawings. About three years back, I decided that it would be a good idea to join the local club and the next thing I knew, I had scratch built a 3D model and one of the guys flew it for me and told me it was a good flying plane, take it home and put it away and get a trainer. I did. The flying bug caught up with me and I've spent little time on the P&W Wasp jr since.

These engines take well over a thousand hours of work to build, and in the case of the P&W, the castings alone were over $1000. One guy told me that having the cam hardended and ground cost him close to $400 after he machined it. The Wasp jr will run on glow, or ignition. There is options for a high pressure supercharger, or a standard one , and also for a starter. The engine in this video has a constant speed prop with 19" carbon fiber blades. I just couldn't see something like it go dead stick and crash.

Check out these two Yahoo web groups. R_and_R_Engines and Min_Int_Comb_Eng These groups and the photos will keep you from flying for several days.

That's only 1.5 cubic inches or so, less than .18 per cylinder. A bit small for an 8 cylinder engine.
