Irvine Engines?
I am looking at the Irvine .25
I found it at 2 places.
Just engines = $55.25
Sig = $150.00
Why the big price difference?
Here are the links.Sigmfg Just Engines

Psst don't tell anyone, I've discovered the secret...
OK, looking at the SIG site, for the entry on the Irvine .25 (as with everything else) there are two columns: Factory Direct and Dealer Network.
Contrary to what you might think, the dealer network price is not a trade price, but the recommended retail price you would expect to pay if you bought the engine from a dealer eg Quantum Models or Dougs Hobby.
I figured this out when I went to my LHS and he looked on the site and gave me a price on an Irvine. I figured he looked at the Dealer Network price and knocked off a percentage. You'll find that at the two places above, the price should be cheaper than the dealer network prices quoted.
To prove the point, look at the entry for the SIG 4* 60 ARF. The Factory price is $299 and the dealer price is $199. Have you ever seen a 4* offered at $299?
My guess is that SIg are trying to discourage individual people from buying from them directly...
I looked into an Irvine .53 recently. I can get it for around $115 locally. Compare that to a OS .46FX or OS .50. Irvines don't look so dear now, do they?

Yes
Yes, at $115 at a local hobby shop, the Irvine .53 still looks very dear...especially considering how well it out performs the OS .46FX at the same price. The OS .50 will be $40 more.

Pardon my English, by dear I mean expensive ..
Just Engines is an English site in case you hadn't noticed...
So, take yer #55.25, multiply by 0.851 to take off the VAT,
gives #47.02, add a bit for airmail to the US #9.00
gives (estimated) #56.02
Convert to good ol' $$$ (exchange rate 1.63 ouch!)
Gives $91.70
Is that better?

Yup, you're right, and you can get a Magnum etc even cheaper...
The smaller engines do seem to be relatively expensive (dear), but they are very good quality and as always you get what you pay for.....
I've got an Irvine .39, picked it up from Dougs Hobby at a swap meet and paid $115 for it. Yup, it ain't cheap for its size and I ended up putting it in a LT-40 ARF. Its got more poke than a OS 46LA and is lighter than any comparable 40-46 BB engine. 'Sides, it goes with the LT-40 colour scheme

Conversion, the engine itself will run you about 77.00 which is about the same as an OS .25. Shipping will likely be higher but you would have to pay shipping or tax OS as well too so they work out to about the same price. In which case you have to decide if you prefer red(Irvine) or silver(OS), However you can get the Irvine 53 for 104(not including shipping) which is much less expensive than an OS 50 and probably an equal engine. A simple, quick, rough, conversion method would be to take the price in pounds and multiply it by 1.38 or so depending on the exchange rate, ie 55(pounds) = 55*.851*1.63=$76.29(dollars that is) or 55*1.38=$75.90

My calculation included the shipping which is actually the approx rate for a .40 sized engine. So the end result should be cheaper.
Just Engines have a link from the main page for US modelers explaining the calculations, there is also a link to a currency converter which is where I got the 1.63 from.

Thanks for all the help. I decided on an os40la. The kombat20 will fly well with it and it has approx the same weight and bhp as the irvine .25 and costs less. I realize its not a BB however i think it will serve its purpose well.

Good choice.
When I bought my Irvine I was considering using it to upgrade my Hobbico Sturdy Birdy from an OS .25LA.
However, I reconsidered as the Irvine is too good to put on a drainpipe with foam wings. So I got an OS .46LA for it. Not used that yet either.

La40 not la46. 46 will be too much power. It is going into a kombat20 which calls for a 25-32 BB engine. The 40la should fit the bill perfectly.

I got my OS46LA from the LHS, they don't have a great selection and I won't buy an MDS.....
I'm glad I got the 46 and not the 40 as although OS say it's supposed to run an 11x6 I tried it on a 10x6 and it only turned that at 12,000rpm.....

Fuel was Byron 15% semi synthetic, I used the same OS A3 plug, APC 10x6 and GP 2" alu on both engines on the test stand...
The OS 46LA gave me 12,000 and the Irvine 39 gave me 13600rpm

Irvine Engines?
Sometimes I wonder why things have to be so complicated. 25 to 32 is what it calls 4. That made it easy. os.25fx or os32sx. Then it follows up by saying that a 40 size bushing type engine works also. Now I go from an easy coin toss to a zillion options. Heres the thing. I found a barely used os25fx for the same price as a new os40la. Which one do I want? I think the .25fx will give me similar power to the 40la with less weight plus the advantage of BB. Along with the fact that the fx is a better series. Whats your opinion. Again it will be going into a Kombat20 which can be viewed at www.kombat40.com
PS I appreciate all of your feedback. I think the irvine is out of my price range. (or should I say my wifes price range)

Sounds like one way or the other we've come to the same conclusion: an Irivine is too good for a flying drainpipe or signpost!
I wouldn't say there are a zillion options, its just that the LA's are very light for their diplacement the 40/46 being just under an ounce heavier than the 25FX. There probably aren't that many 40 sized engines you can use that would be light enough.
It really depends on where you see yourself going for your next plane. If you think you'll stick with smaller planes then get the 25FX. If you think you might want something larger, go for the LA.
If you do decide on the LA, then the 46 might be better, it can swing a 10x6 at around 12,000rpm

RE: Irvine Engines?
Irvine .61 OLder silver version.
I am having some difficulty with an Irvine .61. Engine starts Ok, But as you approach 3/4 to full throttle it shuts down completely. I"ve changed glow plugs and disassembled and cleaned the carburetor Still same results. Engine has great compression and is apparently undamaged. I can't open throttle without a complete shut down. Fuel is 15% nitro % 20% caster Anyone have any sugestions or run across this with an Irvine ? I purchased this used and it seemes not to have any physical damage at all.

Sledge adjust youridle setiing (idle-low speed controls fuel mix from idle to 3/4 open throttle) high speed needle controls fuel mixture wide open only
