Default Muffler for MDS 40

I have an MDS 40 that I broke the muffler on by screwing around too low to the ground

Anyway, I'm looking at mufflers and wondered if the Tower muffler for their 40 size engines would fit. If not, where can I find an MDS muffler?

The earth does tend to be a bit unforgiving when you hit it.

Horizon Hobbies is the North American distributor for MDS. They can set you up with a new muffler if you want.

IF you want to try other brands the MDS 40 Pro muffler has the same footprint as the OS 40 /46 SF and FX, therefore the Tower muffler would probably be a straight bolt on.
I was using my MDS 40 Pro muffler on my Irvine 46 while waiting for a replacement to come in.

Thanks for the info. One thing I did notice was this engine will not run worth a crap without the muffler on it. I rigged it back together with a hose clamp and screws so I could keep flying. It would barely idle without the muffler, but once I got my cobbled muffler back on it was a screamer again.

Knowing this, I'm a bit scared to try a non-MDS muffler. It seems this engine really needs the back pressure from the muffler. The new MKII MDS muffler does look a lot like the Tower muffler, but it about $10 more expensive.

Would you suggest just sticking with the MDS muffler?

Tower sells Hobbico muffler, which is identical to Tower 46 muffler (just compare the pictures) but comes without two M3 bolts. Hobbico muffler is several bucks cheaper, if you can find inexpensive M3 bolts 35mm long.
I bought this muffler for MDS 40 and used it with great success.

I still have the bolts for the original MDS muffler, so I guess I'll go for that muffler.

Thanks

I broke a muffler for a MDS 61 and could not get a replacement. I eventually had to get one machined up.

The Tower type muffler does have a different muffler pressure than your original. You will have to adjust your needle valve most likely outward. Once you get it set up, there should be no problem as long as your fuel system was OK from the start.

Our modern schnurle ported engines don't seem to do very well without a muffler/some fuel pressure.

That was very evident. I barely got it to idle.

While I was working on a temporary fix to get the broke muffle to stay on so we could fly I was very suprised to see how much pressure the exhaust puts out. I drilled a hole on each side of the muffle neck that bolts to the engine. I took a hose clamp and pop riveted it in the holes and wraped it around the engine cylinder, just like the old strap-on mufflers. I then ran the engine on the ground at full throttle for about 1/4 of a tank and then the rivet head popped off and the muffler pulled away! I tried a bigger rivet and this time the head stayed on, but the rivet pulled apart. I then put another on and it did the same thing! We then found a thin, long screw and ran it through both holes and put a lock washer and nut on it. That held and is still on until I get a new muffler.

The exhaust comes out of this engine like jet blast
