Default Irvine 53 slow to come back to idle?

Got an Irvine 53 in an SU29 with an APC 12.25x3.75. When I pull throttle to idle it seems to take forever for the engine rpm's to come down. Is this due to the airframe being fairly clean or am I missing something with regard to the engine setup?

Thanks

Mike

Default Idle mixture

Mikerjf,

If after it comes down to idle, you keep idling for 20-30 seconds and quickly open the throttle and it stutters, spits fuel and dies (or eventually accelerates), the idle mixture is way too rich.

Close the idle needle gradually; 1/8th of a turn at a time, until it behaves. Every time you check, bring the engine to high RPM, for a few seconds, to clear it of excess fuel, before checking again.

Sincerely,

Once it comes down it'll stay there all day and the transition is crisp and clean. Just takes forever to come down in the air.

Did you ever figure out the problem?

Default Idle issue

HI Mike, Your engine may be running too hot causing it to take a long time to transition to idle. If that is the case look first at high speed mixture and then for proper cooling/air flow around the engine. Wayne

I've got an Irvine 53 but I've never experienced this problem. Good to know the fix in case I ever do. The Irvine sure is a real hoss!

My guess is it is the prop ,try a different prop. My OS50 and my buddies Irvine 53 both take a while to spool down with a APC 12.25x3.75. With a different prop it is a different story.

ENGINE IS ON THE LEAN SIDE, MORE THAN LIKELY SMALL AIR LEAK AROUND CARB BASE, OR AROUND THROTTLE BARREL,HAVE SEEN THIS CONDITION NUMEROUS TIMES. IT IS CALLED (COME DOWN), IF IT WERE RICH THE ENGINE IDLE WOULD COME DOWN INSTANTLY AND LOAD UP, ALSO CHECK AROUND NEEDLE VALVE FOR AIR LEAK, A SMALL LEAK WILL CAUSE THIS CONDITION, IF YOU HAVE AN O-RING AT THE BASE OF CARB, REMOVE CARB AND PUT A LITTLE (BLACK SILICONE) AROUND O-RING AND RE-SEAT CARB, ALSO CHECK FOR AIR BUBBLES IN FUEL LINE, IF ENGINE RUNS WELL ON TOP END AND IS NOT LEAN IT IS MORE THAN LIKELY SUCKING AIR AROUND THE CARB, WHEN THE THROTTLE BARREL IS CLOSED

A too lean low end mixture is what's causing this problem.
