Default New Style Saito Mufflers

First off let me say that the new style of Saito muffles suck! There big and bulky looking. I just picked up my new .91 today and it came with one of these mufflers? What is Saito thinking, is there an advantage to this kind of muffler?

Second (my question), can you cut the length of threaded pipe shorter or will that affect the engine's performance? Obviously an increase in performance would be ok, but not a drop?

Anyone cut the pipe before?

Thanks, Mike

Got the same one w/ my new 100, but have'nt run it yet...I don't think shortening would hurt perf. (much, if any) How short you gonna cut it? I heard they did it because the old types were comming apart(?)

You're moving the source of backpressure closer to the exh. valve tho...Maybe if the revs drop too much, you could take the muffler apart and drill the hole a little bigger???

Dang Mike, I just bought a new .91 and I don't think the muffler looks that bad.

I think it looks bulky, and I'm not sure if it will fit in my cowl eitherl... Looks too much like a 2-stroke muffler for me. I'm gonna look up a flex pipe from horizon...

I hope that new mufflers will be better. Old muffler for Saito 180 generally is not very effective and also mechanically weak. Its walls are too thinn to hold pressure nipple for any longer than few flights.
