Help, I just bought a used engine. Am I OK?
I just received a used RCS 1.40 advertised with 2 gallons run through it. The outside seems like it's in good shape, the spark plug looks good, but the top of the piston has a black sooty something all over it. The engine seems to have good compression, but I'm used to 50s and 60s so I can't tell you for sure, but it is VERY hard to turn over using just the thrust collar. The ring seems good, but the piston looks like it's been steel wooled and the liner has some strange marks that looks like it's been honed. Most of the liner is shiny, but parts of it are dull. The dull parts appear above the intake ports and just to the left and above the exhaust port. I havn't run it yet, so I can't tell you how it runs, but I will run it tomorrow. Am I OK, or did I get a bad deal?
Here are the pics I took.

and the liner... The black you see is actually shiney, The black piston top makes it look black. This is an RCS 1.40 SE.

Glow engines are usually cleaner than gas engines internally.
Trying to gauge the compression by turning the engine over by hand is a no-no. Put a prop on it.
The original honing should still be evident in the cylinder of an engine with only a couple of gallons of gasoline ran through it.
I think you are worrying for naught. Run the engine for a while and then make up your mind.
They are sweet engines and the importer will bend over backwards to take care of you should something be amiss. Not to worry.

OK, thanks. I was hoping that's what it was. This is my first gasoline RC engine, but I have seen weed eater engines that look ten times worse and run just fine.

I can't wait to fire her up! I've heared the idle on these things are to die for! What kind of fuel/oil should I use? And how many gallons will this engine last. I know there is no real way to tell, but a rough estimate would be nice. Are we talking gallons upon gallons upon gallons of fuel? Gasoline powered RC is brand new to me.
