I have an LT-40 trainer with an evolution 40NT engine. 8.5lb plane with a wimpy .39 engine. Full throttle barely lifts off ground. I'm looking into a tuned pipe to get a little more performance out of my plane. What is the CHEAPEST header and tuned pipe the will work for the evo 40? I built a mousse can muffler but my dad (he doesn't do rc stuff) won't let me put it on my engine. [:@] I just need the cheapest dirt (maybe used?) tuned pipe and header for the evo 40. I REALLY need more power so is there a cheap pipe that works really good? hmmm.

Take a look at the prices at Tower Hobbies...there you'll have an idea of the prices...it doesn't worth unless you want every bit of power in a speed plane....I would go for a Magnum 46 xls or a similar engine...
The tuned pipe requires also "tunning" and a proper setup to work at it's best....with a bigger engine...you just have to bolt it.

you can also put a Tower muffler on it (I think it fits) you may experience about 500-1000 Rpm increase (according to the people here). it is about 13 Dollars.

The Tower muffler will not fit this small block engine and a Jett muffler cost even more than a bigger engine. Just get a cheap .50 engine and you`ll be happy. Hobbycity sells ASP XLS 52 for only 55$, you`ll have way enough power with that one and it is cheaper than any pipe you can buy

Yikes! How in the heck does an LT40 weigh in at 8.5 lbs anyway? The biggest performance improvement you can do for that plane would be for it to loose some weight!
I agree - when weighing the benefits ($$$) of a pipe -vs- a bigger engine, I'd always go for the bigger engine... unless you can drag one outta the bay for cheap. http://www.macspro.com/headers_side.asp lists a header for the Evo .40, and it crosses it with many popular brands of engines.... you may get lucky if you shop the bay.

the evo 40 is MASSIVE. It's WIMPY at .39 displacement. It's HUGE. It WEIGHS 18oz!!!! It has the same muffler mounting dimensions as a tt46 or os 40-46fx. Does the tower pipe really improve performance very much? Is it loud? I think it will fit the evo.?

If it has the same muffler mounting dimensions as the .46 FX then the Tower muffler will fit. I use it on my .52 size and it gives a good 5-800 rpm more than the stock muffler. As others have mentioned, your plane is very hevy for some reason. An Lt 40 should be around 6-6.5 pounds and that is your biggest problem. I`m not so sure that you will be happy even if you get the Tower muffler, you need a lighter plane or a bigger engine. A friend of mine had a FX .61 in his LT 40 and with APC 12.25-3.75 he took off on about 10 feet and went vertical, his plane weighed a little over 6 pounds

I'm curious as to why your Dad won't let you install the mousse can pipe, but will let you install a header and a pipe. Makes no sense to me. You'll do far less damage to the engine with the MCP if you make a mistake than you ever will with a real header and pipe.
You can find used pipes and headers here on RCU or on eBay. I buy most of that stuff used these days myself. Buying new doesn't make any sense. You can buy an Aviastar .53 for the price of a new Mac's header and pipe and the resulting match won't perform as well as the Aviastar .53.
You'll have to look around and discover which other engines share the same bolt pattern as your Evolution engine and then buy those headers.
Don't get discouraged. Follow your Dad's advice and try to get as much flying time as you can at any speed your model will muster. Believe me, there's tons and tons to learn about the hardest flight mode of all - slow flight.

An important question was asked but not responded to.
What size Prop are you using?
I use a TT GP42 on a 6.5 pound trainer and it was a dog on the recommended 10x6. An 11x4 was ok, but an 11x5 is a great prop for this engine and plane and reallly woke up the performance.
Also, I'd second the advice to by an Aviastar .53 for your plane.

I've tryed 10x6, 11x7, and I'm running a 10x7 now. All MA props. I've pretty much convinced my dad to let me use a pipe, but I've outgrown my trainer and I don't want to put more money into it ($700 already in this project). I'll try the 11x5 apc I guess.

The APC 11x5 will be your best bet, hell if my .46 can pull around a 10lb plane then your .40 should be able to fly a 8.5lb plane around, it's all about getting the best prop on it.

Definitely down prop the pitch. I'd start with an 11x5 APC first too. In this size, there is a performance difference between the MA and the APC. Get the APC for your trainer.
I believe you will end up with a flyable plane. It'll probably be a tad wimpy for loops, etc., but hopefully, it'll be a fine trainer, especially since it only involves changing a $3 prop.
