Default GREEN?

Hello All,
I popped the head off of my ST45 for the first time this morning and was very surprised to see a dark green tint on top of the piston and on the head. I'vebeen using Cool Power 15% most recently. Is it normal for an engineto take on the colorof the fuel it is using?

SORRY! I'VE OBVIOUSLY SELECTED THE WRONG PHOTO. WILL TRY AGAIN

If your engine is the ABC version....you better add a couple of ounces of castor oil to the cruel power.

And yes, that's pretty normal, but you'll see some colors more than others... Cool power oil is green... so green is what you see, and looks like the green dye is the only thing that remains on the engines using coolpower, while the oil dissapears .

I used to dye my fuel, and the color remained inside the engine. Other than that there is nothing to worry about.

Saludos,

Jorge

Dave,

Welcome to RCU.

I second Jorge!
Morgan Fuels; the manufacturer of 'Cruel Power', [link=http://www.morganfuel.com/omega_main.htm]recommend[/link] using their own Omega fuels, for engines with an ABC, or an ABN P+L.

Your Super Tigre is an ABC engine, so I cannot understand why you selected this 'fuel' for your engine.

I would go a step further and recommend staying away from Cool Power and most other all-synthetic American made fuels, unless you are happy replacing your bearings often, or running your engine unprotected...

Sig Champion, or PowerMaster GMA (50/50 oil, 20% and 22% respectively), are even better fuels.

Howdy Dar,
I am fully aware of the construction type in my ST45 but was not aware that Cool Power was inadequate for the ABC type engine. Thanks for the tip, you can bet I'll be using fuel with at least some castor blend. I have been happy with Wildcat Premium Xtra 10 / 18. I usually bring up the oil another 2 % to an even 20%.

Add 2.5 ounces of high quality castor oil to the fuel and you'll be fine.

I've seen the insides of engines tinted blue, green, pink and purple...
Blue Thunder and Monster Horsepower (purple ) are car fuels...

This is an excellent example of "if you don't know what you are doing, don't take it apart". Or, "If it ain't broke - don't fix it".

What would alarm me is if the inside of the engine was red when I was burning green fuel.

Yeah he's got the beatnick or starving artist look going. (Maybe not so starving since it's pudding.)

I typically add some castor to my fuel if it doesn't contain it already mainly because of reading on here how harmful fuel containing no castor can be. I can honestly say that I ran many, many, many gallons of Cool Power through a number of engines including my OS Hyper 50 in my Raptor Heli WITHOUT a SINGLE problem of ANY kind bearing or otherwise. I genuinely feel the castor is a good thing and will continue to add it if not already there but I will also feel quite safe if I have to fly a gallon or two without it because of an availability issue. These days I usually buy Rich's Brew which I have custom blended by Randy (I live about 10 miles from his hobby shop) and that blend contains both castor and synthetic. Wildcat also works well for me as does Byrons and Powermaster.

Hi Jezmo,
I too prefer castor blend fuels. My old OS .70 Surpass has a heavy buildup present on the exhaust valve shank. I may be wrong by I always attributed that to the steady diet of Sig Champion I used to feed it. My brotherhas usedCool Power exclusively for many years and has, like you, never experienced any negative engine problems because of it. I normally use Wildcat Premium Xtra and add 2% oil but I purchased this jug of Cool Power a couple of years ago and thought I'd better get rid of it. I'll be glad when it's gone but again I've had no problems engine wise but have had to endure one or two comments regarding my mental capacity as a result of my question about the internal green appearance.

Jez,

Engines typically have a life-span of ~400 hours, or ~100 gallons; when properly run, with enough good oil and the proper percentage of nitro.

Practically any engine will survive one-two gallons of CruelPower and you should not consider it OK for your engine because of this.

In the early eighties, when I was flying/practicing pattern, I burned several drums of Cool Power 5% with nary a drop of added castor oil. All of the engines were high quality OS & Webra engines. No rebuilds or spare parts were needed. The Cool Power fuel worked fantastically well, but I always made sure to keep the mixture on the rich side (at the end of the flight too) and to use Marvel Air Tool Oil as an ARO.

Has the Cool Power formula changed since 1980 - 84? I do not know. That is possible. But I doubt it.

Ed,
What is the source for your new name? You may want to consider changing it. A web search for NM2K brings up the Naked Mile 2K run. Adult content.

Hi, Sport Pilot. That's pretty good! <G>

NM2K has been my amateur radio callsign since September of 1985. A few months ago, I changed it back to my original callsign of N2ECW, thinking I would like it better. I didn't. Then I applied for a new 4 district (where I now live) callsign and was issued AJ4PJ by the FCC. After a while, I grew to miss my old callsign of 23 years, NM2K, and reapplied to for that callsign. Surprisingly enough, the FCC granted my request, and rather quickly I must say. So, I went full circle and I'm now back to where I started. I'm not leaving this callsign again by free will.

Hahaha. Classic.

Iam sure most of us in here have spent a few Sunday afternoons in front of the TV looking much the same.
Big Sunday lunch puts me to sleep every time.

Love the green piston and head.
