Default glow plug re-thread

Does anyone know where I could send a head for a Fox 15 for re-threading? This engine's pushing 45 years old and I'm trying to reserect it, but after close examination I discovered the threads for the glow plug have been somewhat stripped at one time therefore not allowing a compression tight seal. My local machine shop insists there aren't helicoils in 1/4-36, so I'm at a loss. I've since checked with Fox, and they can't do it either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You want 1/4-32, not 1/4-36

Clarence Lee used to do this, he might still. Check ads in the backs of the model mags for how to get in touch with him.

Clarence Lee still does them. Give him a call.
The helicoil is a special 1/4x32 type. There are some tool specialty stores that sell the kit. But it is expensive as you have to buy a bunch of them.
Besides Clarence Lee, if I remember right, there were a couple of others who did the repair too.

This guy used to advertise that he could repair the stripped glow plug threads too:

Thanks...fifteen bucks, which is reasonable. I appreciate it.

You could do it too. If you have access to a drill press, you can install the helicoli yourself. They're not that hard to do.

I have not done helicoils for many, many years. But, I remember you need a special tool to insert them and a special tap for the hole. Also, you cannot buy one of the 1/4-32 - and a bunch will cost you dearly.

Helicoil isn't tough to do. But if you need to do one, the helicoil kit is expensive. In a fourstroke where the plug is offset it can take some time to square things up correctly. If the thread isn't square tot eh sealing face the plug gasket will not seal.

You can get a tap and die set from Harry Higley and Sons for 1/4 - 32. If all you need to do is chase the threads, that's the tool, the tap. I use the die on some plugs if I suspect it might be off a little bit. Anyway, once you have the set, you can use it for a very long time. And no, it will not replace the need for a heli-coil if you need one. That you need to send to Mr. Clarence Lee as reference above.

Cheers,

Chip

Helicoil doesn't make the 1/4-32, but apparently recoil makes a similar product in 1/4-32.

Give Fox a call. They may be able to fix you up with a replacement head.
