Hi, i have aquired this engine. It has no markings on it. It has a very strange carb with a flat sided spray bar and a weird backplate that goes all the way up above the exhaust port. It's a 40 sized engine. It's got so much compression that I almost can't turn the crank over by hand without a prop installed. I don't think it's ever been ran. Can anyone shed any light as to what it is? Anyone know what it might be worth?

It was made by Fox Manufacturing of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Very powerful for its day. The carb adjusts backwards, in that you adjust the low speed needle first and then the high speed needle.
I liked the flat blade carb, once I got used to it.

Looks like a Fox 40. The butterfly carb dates it to before my R/C days. I would guess mid-70's, but perhaps someone can give you more specific details.

It is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it, but you all knew that.
There are probably a few rabid Fox-o-philes around that would part with a fiver for it (Fox-o-philes are cheapskates - don't ask how I know - blush!).

Although this is for the 40BB and it appears you have the bushing version, this instruction manual should help you to break in and set up the carb. The older Fox's took a while to break in.

Use that engine...don't sell it for peanute.
The Fox .40 will still outperform most current .40's and it's lighter as well.
The lapped piston takes longer to break in, but it's like an old cast iron frying pan.....ever seen one wear out? Me neither.
Good engine...crappy muffler.

Yo, Mike....I have a couple .40's for a Duelist....
the .45's really cranked....
I don't even wanna tell you guys about the last Fox
powered (or lack of) plane i saw fly....it's too sad.

I think Maxtnet must have had the OS FP series in mind, the bushing 40 backdoor Fox's easily outpowered them. It would be a close second to an OS FSR. But Fox had ball bearing version's would easily outrun the FSR. In fact the Fox Quickee 500 would easily out run any OS V series. Fox engines have a few faults, but being a weak runner is not one of them.
The FSR series came out about 1975, the backdoor Fox's began either the late 70's or early 80's. But not sure if the butterfly carb Fox was one of the first backdoor version's, or a bit later.

There was nothing spectacular about it, it served me long enough to learn to fly, and long enough to realize that there were much better engines than a bushing Fox 40.
I would place a value on it of about $25~$35, maybe $5 more if it had a muffler.
I think it would make a much better conversation piece than a flyer, if you decide to run it be sure to run fuel with castor oil only as the lube due to the piston/bushing material used. 22~24% castor, 10% nitro ought to be just dandy.
Hope you enjoy your vintage Fox engine.

....well I've never owned
a Fox....
....musta' stemmed from those old days
in control line....the fellas would buy those totally
junk Fox .35's....spend a couple hours trying to get
it started, and go home disappointed.
Meanwhile, my K&B Stallion would usually start with
2 or 3 flips....
....then out came the Fox
r/c motors with "that funny carb"....man were those junk.
I think maybe the electric starter was invented by some
guy trying to get a Fox running....and talk about gutless.
....well I've never owneda Fox....
