Default 61 vf tuned pipe

Hey all, I just bought a 61 VF with header but no pipe.

I've been scrounging around for a decent pipe, and apart form a macs or a hattori I haven't found much.

I do however have a tuned pipe that was for "40-50" engines. I think it might marry up (same inlet size) but it's a lot shorter than say my hanno pipe (roughly 8" to 12" to the baffle)

THe diameter is a little smaller too. I'm wondering whether this pipe might ok for the VF as I assume it should need a smaller pipe length to get to around the 14k mark.

What do you think?

I'll get some more detailed dimensions later today.

Hey Rende,

Check out the dimensions for the MACS models "1060", I think they were called. These were for old school high rpm 60s. I think these days they are marketed for 8 - 10cc engines.

Anything with approximately these dimensions will be fine for your VF.

Remember that the length of the pipe plus header dictates the RPM at which the combo is useable. The engine capacity and nitro percentage dictate the pipe volume required.

There's more to it than this but it will put you in the ballpark for getting a useable set up.

Don't be fearful of experimenting either.

DF

Oh, your Hanno Pipe is for low revving long stroke engines, hence it's longer.

If that's the one that went on ebay a couple of weeks ago you got it for a good price . I thought about bidding on it but I've already got one and a lovely engine it is too. I've got a chart for pipe lengths for various port timings/revs and it indicates that, for the 61VF with 150 degrees total timing, the pipe should be about 15 1/2" from plug to first baffle at 14,000 revs. For best effect the pipe should have an internal volume suited for the engine size but you should still get boost from a smaller pipe so long as the stinger size doesn't choke it down too much. I've only run mine on the bench so far with an Eather CF pipe meant for a 45 but set very long so it only acted as a muffler. Just one tip though, because it's ABN I'll only run mine with 20-25% all castor which seems to stop that horrid peeling problem .

Try the smaller pipe but from first hand experience I would recommend the Macs 1160. I used this on my OS VF .61 (OS 7D carb with factory fitted sleeve) with very good results. 14,400 - 14,500 static with the APC 11 x 7 prop, with a nice unload in the air, a good fuel draw and total reliability. If noise is a problem, consider the 1260 Macs.

Well, to be honest I forgot about this till just now.

Anyway I pulled the pipe out and its 8" from the baffle to the coupling, and the header is 6 1/2" long and the distance from the header to the glow plug (in plan) is about an inch, so that's around about 15 1/2".

Also it looks about right, and the pipe coupling end is the right diameter. I guess I'll be using this pipe!

Cheers guys!
