20% nitro vs 30% nitro
Is there truly a significant power gain with and increased nitro content. The guys at my field are saying if I switch to 30% from 20% in a Saito 56 I will see a big difference. What do you think.

RE: 20% nitro vs 30% nitro
Better idle possibly. I'm about to find out, I picked up 3 gallons of 30% locally from a guy going electric, $12 a gallon, I figured at that price why not try it? I wouldn't go out and spend more for 30%.

RE: 20% nitro vs 30% nitro
Yes, going from 15%nitro - 18%oil to 25% nitro-18%oil I saw only about 200rpm more. However going from 15% nitro 18%oil to 30%nitro-23% low viscosity oil heli fuel I saw a 600rpm increase and a smoother running engine with better idle. Engine was Saito 72 with a 13/6apc running at 10k plus. That having been said the engine runs great on 15% and that's what I use. The gain from 30% is not worth the price. If you are flying a 3D plane that's marginal on performance the added power from the fuel is not the answer. A bigger motor is or a tuned exhaust system.

Is the .56 Saito one of the high compression versions? If so you may burn the motor up with that much nitro. But if the compression is low enough it will. But be sure not to have a lean run. A lean run on high nitro runs a lot hotter than a lean run on low nitro.

I've tried 20% and 30% on YS Engines and there is a noticeable power increase. Exactly how much is difficult to tell but you certain feel the difference when flying. But boy, it gets expensive. As mentioned, on certain engines OS for example, one get a negative effect with nitro over 15%.
It's depends on the compression ratio of the engine. Try it and see... but remember, if it works it become serious addictive. Check with the bank manager.

RE: 20% nitro vs 30% nitro
I have a few Saitos , my latest purchase is a 65 . I was running 20% and it ran very well, as you stated many of the guys were pushing the 30% so I decided to try it. Honestly I was delited with the out come, I gained 400 to 500 rpm which in my case was great as it made my take-offs a heck of a lot better Bob A

RE: 20% nitro vs 30% nitro
I have tested a number of Saito smaller sized engines on 15% and 30% (Wildcat premium Xtra). The gain going from 15% to 30% was generally between 200 and 400 rpm depending upon prop size (with greater gains seen with the smaller props, less with the larger end of the useable prop size). Idle should also be a few hundred rpm lower.
Personally I have never needed the extra "oomph" in my planes, but it will give you some increase, thats for sure. Not as much as most think IMO.

RE: 20% nitro vs 30% nitro
Nitro is power................not intended to increase rpm's, but allow you to swing more prop.
on the YS 110s i have i was able to go from a 15x8 to a 15x10 with no rpm loss, but a much more efficient running engine that idle even better on 30% than it did on 20%.
so forget the "more rpm" thing and look for more prop to harness the extra power.
