durable remote glow igniter for YS
does anyone have a good solution for a good, solid connection for remote glow igniters on YS engines, especially on a soft mount? Mine get shaken to bits and can't stay on but a couple flights.
Tried the OS, Sullivan and DuBro ones, but without much success. Any ideas? Thanks much in advance. I've almost resorted to soldering the wire to the plug! |

Some people use a brass wheel collar with a wire soldered on , If you drill and tap a second setscrew hole it should be at right angle to the other hole rather than 180 degrees from it. It may also help to secure the wire with an insulated clip near the plug to support the connection rather than rely on the connector to do all the holding.

Thanks for the idea...
I've heard of that, but how do you tighten the set screws when the glow plug is recessed as in the YS engines? |

This has worked for me on cowled 4-strokes: take a short length of brass tubing; slip it over the glow plug post, but leave 1/8" or so away from plug body; lightly crimp the tubing with diagonal cutter all the way around, squeezing the tubing into the concave ring around the glow plug post; maybe make two crimp rings; now pull the tubing off the glow plug; take dremel cutoff wheel and run a slit up the tubing maybe 3/16" from the end; this will allow the tubing to flex somewhat, and snap in to the indentations on the glow plug post; squeeze the slotted tubing down to get a snap fit onto the glow plug; solder your igniter wire to the tubing; bend the tubing 90 degrees if that helps your fit under the cowl; slip a piece of heat shrink over the tubing to insulate it from the cylinder head; snap it on, and see if it won't work.

Maxx Products (MPI) has a good glow plug connector that comes
with their on-board glow driver. It is spring-loaded and has a rubber boot to cover the plug. To attach, you pull on the wire, which disengages the spring inside the boot, slip it over the plug and let go of the wire. This locks it onto the serrations on the plug post. To remove, you again pull on the wire and lift off. While installed, vibration will not knock off the cord as it takes direct pulling of the wire to remove the boot. Click on the following link to see the connector at MPI's website. They sell the connector by itself with a 20" lead for $5 or the complete remote glow plug system for $11.50. http://www.maxxprod.com/mpi-22.htm Hope this helps. |

thanks for all the great ideas! I might try the MPI and if that doesn't work, make one myself. I'd do the latter first, but time is of the essence right now for me.
