ORIGINAL: earlwb Making such a nice stand like that. Wow! that is really nice. But now it is too nice to use as you'll get it dirty now. ;) LOL Yeah, actually it's kind of embarrassing to have a nice new clean test stand. Makes it look like you haven't done much testing! Hopefully I'll get this little power box dirtied up with some VT240 exhaust soon. I've got my eye on a HD video camera on ebay. I want to make a good video of the VT240 running rather than the few low rez, crappy ones on Youtube. The video that made me want a VT240 in the first place. Looking at the video now, I liked the sound becuse there is no visual detail. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL-29crnMhY VT-240 crucified on a fence post with long glow igniters allmost touching the prop. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xHKBIWasKg Video quility so bad you can even tell if it's a VT240 or even a twin engine at all! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66Ri-kxshE0 This guy built a nice power box and engine mount but didn't have time to be bothered makeing a stand so he just ran the engine on the curb. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeeHvU_Rnao |

ORIGINAL: AmishWarlord If you want to just test the that engine upright then this stand works great! http://www.ebay.com/itm/ENGINE-TEST-...item337900f5e4 I use it for engine under 2.75 cu upright The back plate is for larger engines or engine mounted in different positions. Bill |
RE: Club Enya
Bill that guy is a genius! He has invented a way for you to test out the engine wile at the same time not getting any bills in the mail. |
RE: Club Enya
I happen to use that same test stand as shown by AmishWarlord for most of my engine testing. At first I was somewhat reluctant as the workmanship on it is really nice and you sort of don't want to get it dirty.
But sometimes a small engine may have problems with the clamping nuts. A Fox 049 just fits, but the needle valve is a bit tricky to adjust. So I made a puck adapter to give the engine a little more room. http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...6x3prop_01.jpg This Fuji .05's muffler just barely clears the clamping nut. Using a small wood adapter I call a puck. http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...est_run_02.jpg http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...muffler_18.jpg Norvel .049 with puck adapter http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...est_run_02.jpg Now then a ASP 1.80 engine is getting up to near the maximum size for the engine test stand. I would show a pic of it, but for some odd reason the website forum doesn't like the ASP engine pictures. But my Enya R1.20 still works fine on it though http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...ne_test_01.jpg Some weird to mount engines also use special adapters too like this MP Jet 1.8cc diesel for example http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...cengine_03.jpg My Parra 2.5cc engine needed a puck adapter as well, so that the cool looking tuned muffler would clear the clamping nuts. http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...est_run_06.jpg But I have had to make special test stands for engines such as my WOHM 10cc radial diesel engine http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/g...est_run_05.jpg |
RE: Club Enya
That puck mount is a good idea Earl. I'll be using that one on my test stand.

RE: Club Enya
I built my own test stand, sort of similar to Earl & AW's. I used Red Oak and Brazilian Walnut hardwood flooring scraps and some 3/16" aluminum plate I had laying around. It will accommodate an .061 up to at least a 1.0/16cc though I'm sure it will take a 25-30cc engine. I will have to make an adapter to fit my Stihl 15cc that's getting converted to glow since it doesn't have standard mount lugs. My now dead Fox .40 wouldn't fit using the stock Fox muffler. Everything else I have fits, and eventually I will add the ability to run twins at the same time.
I just clamp the test bed to a crate I made from 2x4's and 2x6's. I don't have a picture of it off-hand but if you've seen any of my engine videos you'll see it. |

OMG Ram, do you really have to quote and repeat that long chain of photos twice!

RE: Club Enya
Many digital cameras with a decent auto-flash setup are capable of doing it. It is having the flash go off when it takes the picture.
I am using a Sony 8 megapixel camera form those pics. But my Olympus 14 megapixel camera does it too, as well as my old Pentax digital camera. I would not be surprised if my iPhone could do it too. I think my old ancient Sony CD camera can do it too. |
RE: Club Enya
Cheaper cameras can do better than a larger flash.
A small flash fires at 1/100,000 of a second wile a large flash fires at 1/10,000 of a second. |

ORIGINAL: earlwb Yeah I sort of hate to get it dirty. :D I have wanted to get a VT-240, unfortunately lots of other people want one more badly that I do. PLEASE, SOMEBODY! Buy me this: eBay item # 330770942335. It's really inexpensive. Cheers, Bill |
RE: Club Enya
An open suggestion to the good people at ENYA Metal Manufacturing, Japan:
Please, please bring back the V-240, preferably with spark ignition, or your nifty gas/petrol suitable glow plugs, and a carburettor calibrated for gas/petrol. It would be a winner. |
RE: Club Enya
On Ebay right now! Item number 120966323800. New in the box VT-240 with a buy it now shipped of $899! Somebody lend me 900 bucks quick!

I have the VT-240 almost ready to break in today. I still need to get some more nuts and bolts to bolt down the fuel/power box and install the fuel regulator to get fuel up to those carbs. Looks like a great day to break in the engine and make a video of it! Here are some photos of the VT-240 on the engine stand. |
RE: Club Enya
That looks phenomenal, AW. I'm drooling. [X(]

RE: Club Enya
Wow! Nice job on the engine test stand setup for your VT-240 engine. But now it is too nice to run the engine on, it will get dirty now.

RE: Club Enya
That's the prettiest test stand I have ever seen. I bet you could sell those. One thing strikes me about the test run though, I noticed you used the "Y" connection to feed the two carbs. I know this is how Enya intended the carbs to be fed, but from the many posts about running the VT-240 here on this thread and the "Does Anyone Love Enyas" thread, two separate feed lines from the same tank or two tanks are what it takes to get a reliable run out of this engine. I have the "Y" connection with my VT-240, but I intend to use the two pickups from one tank method. What percent nitro in the fuel? Another question, did you shut off the power to the glow plugs at some time during the run? You show yourself turning it on, but we never see you opening that throw switch. I also noticed the excellent editing of the movie, but it makes me wonder about the break in procedure you were using. I'm sure it was several short runs to "heat cycle" the engine for break in and not one continuous run like the movie suggests. Just wondering how much break in time had actually elapsed before you made the transition from idle to full power towards the end of the movie. Sorry about all the questions, but I have never run my VT-240 and just wanted to pick your brain. Awesome engine and a great movie about running it. Probably one of the best I have seen on you tube and one of the first in HD. I hope the flying using the engine goes as well.

RE: Club Enya
rrengineer, the video is just something for the engine lovers that can just watch an engine idling for 5 mins.
I didn't plan for it to be a "how to break in" video. That video is made from 5 mins of an hours worth of running. I did learn some things. I need to install diagonal braces to keep the brackets from vibrating on the stand. I'm thinking about getting a child's wagon and filling it with concrete and an imbedded steel eye bolt. I then could use a ratchet strap to pull the wagon up and lock the stand down into the ground. The stand weighs 30 pounds and that engine can only put out 20 pounds but it was still starting to tip the stand over. I had read about that Y connector problem but forgot about it. It's true that left just is a fuel hog and starves the right jug. I think I'd go with two separate fuel tanks rather than two pick up lines in one tank. The video is a fuzzy HD 740 but I filmed it in 1080 full HD. I'm trying to load the full HD video but Youtube is taking 4 hours to upload and my laptop keeps dropping connection during that time. I think 4 hours to upload is ridiculous for a 5 minute video! It should take 45 secounds! I feel like I'm back in the days of dial-up. |
