ASP or OS
 

Ok guys and girls,

Believe it or not, I can not decide on an engine even after reading the Engine War post!

I live in Namibia, Africa, and while I can order any engine from anywhere, I would like to buy one of the two brands available at my LHS. I would like to decide between OS and ASP. I'm looking at the .91 2-stroke to put in a World Models Extra330L 60 size plane.

OK, The ASP is the new Series 3 engine (OS Clone). It is half the price of the OS. The OS needs no introduction. I borrowed both the engines from the LHS and weighed them on a scale with a two gram tollerance. Here are the figures:

OS
Muffler - 184g
Engine - 570g (with carburator)
Total - 754g

ASP
Muffler - 160g
Engine - 554g (with carburator)
Total - 714g

According to the latest specs, the ASP has 0.2 BHP less than the OS. Is it worth buying the OS? I don't have a money tree at the back of my house (read:wife is frouning already) and i tend to lean towards the ASP.

PLEASE COMMENT AND HELP A FELLOW PILOT!!!!

If they were the same price I would pick the one with a chrome plated cylinder bore over the one with a nickel plated bore.

The ASP has the chromed bore, the OS has the nickel plating.

Then when you consider the ASP being so much less expensive, to me the ASP wins the sale.

Really no contest.

I would get the ASP, in Malaysia a LHS gets the ASPs for rock bottom prices. The OS 91 FX would cost about USD185 while the ASP 91 only USD95! The ASP runs well for sure and as William says, chrome is better than nickel.

In light of all the trouble people are having with the OS .91FX and the fact that OS has changed it Company policy from producing Highes possible quality to producing the highest possible profits even at the expence of quality and warranty claims, I would have to pick the ASP. I have one of those really sick OS .91 FX's that runs for S**T and Hobby Services will not warranty. No more OS two strokes for me. Eventhough I have 3 OS 4 strokes (Older ones) that run very well, I will not take a chance on another one.

I have an ASP .75 that is 18 years old and still tearing up the sky's on my 11 lbs., high wing Beast.

This plane is a 60 size that is 14 years old and been rebuilt 8 times. I do not know the make, but it has unlimited verticle with that ASP on it. We are going to use it to drop the RC Skydivers off of it.

I have four ASP engines that run very well. Never any trouble.

Go with the ASP at half the price....take the wife out to dinner. ;)

I have that engine in a delta Vortex, it has plenty of power. It likes
5% nitro, a smallish prop, and a cool plug. It is a high compression
European type motor. If you want to run big props, you will have
to decompress the engine with another head shim. ;)

Thanks guys! I also thought that the ASP is a good buy. I was planning to spin a 14x8 prop and decide between APC and MAS. However, I am sure that is a subject well covered in these forums!

ASP all the way. I have nothing against OS but their prices are way out of line right now.

On the subject of ASP engne. Could some one tell me where I can buy ASP engines? I have searched the web but couldn't find any dealer. The source must be a well kept secret.

In the USA ASP engines are sold under the "Magnum" name.

I own the Magnum 91 XLS (same as the ASP), and it is an excellent engine. Easy hand starts every time, very user friendly and makes excellent power. You will not go wrong with this one.

SC 91A

In europa sold as Super Custom (SC).. All tree brands ASP, Magnum and SC are produced in same factory.

I had an ASP 4 stroke 70 once. I had many issues with the idle and acceleration. It took a very long time to break in and get it going. Now I don't use the engine anymore. I have an O.S 55 AX and I have to say I have never seen an engine work better than this one. The idle is a little high but break in was easy and I never had to change the mixture control valve. I am now ordering an O.S 120 Pumped. I have read many reviews and this engine sounds great. Idles are very low and break in is not a problem. I am using this engine on a Top Flight P40 so I want the best idle possible.

And yet people are still asking the same question.

If you're loaded and money isn't an issue, buy the OS. You won't be sorry. However, if money IS an issue, you can't go wrong buying a Sanye engine if the retailer/importer will stand behind it. They take a little longer to break-in. What does that mean? It means that you won't get the lowest idle right out of the box. It means that it might quit a few times during the first flights before it breaks in enough to stabilize and stay running. It means that if you break the engine into multiple pieces because you are a new pilot and prone to make mistakes, you won't cry nearly as long as you would have had the engine been an OS.

It also means it will probably last longer.

Parts are half price.
