All Time Favorite Engine
What is your all time favorite engine? It doesn't have to be one that you use or have now, but the one that, given your choice of all of them that you have seen or known about , you would choose above all others to fly.
My modelling career has actually been in two phases, since I first flew primarily CL Stunt and then migrated to RC Pattern after a hiatus of about 18 years. I'll start off, though it will quickly date me, with my favorite stunt engine, the Fox long shaft, rear rotor .59. This was an incredibly smooth, powerful glow engine with a dual BB shaft and great handling characteristics. It could swing a large prop and pull something like an oversized Super Duper Zilch or Stuntwagon thru any maneuver in the book. I still have one that I received as a Christmas gift from my parents in 1951, and take it out and oil it up from time to time. As RC engines go, I don't think it gets much better than the SuperTigre G60 Bluehead. Though it is a non-schnurle ported engine over 25 years old, it still puts out competitive power, and I always appreciated the reliable, one-flip starts when I was 'on the clock' during my pattern flying days. The ST MagV carb is still one of the finest and most reliable I have ever used. I still have a couple which are like old friends. There, I've said my piece. What are your opinions? |
All Time Favorite Engine
Mine would be the O.S. 61FSR. (Also the earlier 60FSR)
Still have 3 of them running. Always starts right up, hardly ever need to use a starter. Just turn over by hand to prime, hook up glow and backflip. Purrs like a kitten! One of the 61's is in a Midwest Strikemaster. This puppy is fast! Takes off in about 5 feet and goes straight up. Another 61 is slated to go into a AKM Mig-29, and the third (60FSR) will be installed in a Senior Telemaster when I build that one. Such Fun! |
Wow
With 80 plus engines to choose from this is not easy. I have no OS nor any Chinese engines. I would be torn between my Fox .50 and my Fox Eagle .74, my Webra 120, .50 and .61f would be very close seconds.

Chuck -
The 61 FSR would have to rank really high on my list as well. Still have a couple, though one is suffering from OS Pox(plating separating from the cyl liner of 'ABC' version), and I have rebuilt it to a hybrid 60/60 with parts obtained from one of the folks on this board. Dave - Wow! With that many engines and none from OS you must have quite a menagerie(sp?). Are you a collector of oldies, exotics, or just can't turn down a bargain? I also have a soft spot for the Fox 45 BB, the 'kissing cousin' to yoiur 50. I've had several thru the years, and though they look like they were machined with a double bit axe, they all have performed as well or better than most of their competitors. Unforunately, they seem to suffer from the same disease as the K&B 40's and wallow out the wrist pin holes if allowed to run lean for even a short time. |
All Time Favorite Engine
Guess my favorite would be a Bantam 19 that I got for Christmas 1946. My Dad & I spent many enjoyable hours running it in basement & building an airplane together. He & the engine are both long gone now but the memories stay. My other would be an ENYA 19 RC my first true RC engine , have about 16 gallons of FOX fuel through it & it`s still a good runner.

I think my favorite would be the Enya .40XTV I got for my 16th B-day(20 yrs ago). I ran that engine really hard for several seasons and it just kept running and putting out great power. Still have it and it's still running.

All Time Favorite Engine
Mine would be my OS46FX. It is over 5 yrs old and has at least 300 to 400 flights on a Global 45 Cutlass but by far mostly on a Dazzler. It runs the same now as it did then. I have never abused a motor this bad and flown one this much. It helps to have never wrecked or dingied up the Cutlass and Dazzler plane. I have other engines that will most likely live up to this benchmark but I simply don't fly those plane that much. My Webra 50 GT Speed is a very close 2nd.

Response to post #4
P51, I don't collect them to leave them in the box, I have runall of them and flown about half. I like to buy engines from other countries, mostly Europe and Japan.
USA- Fox, K&B, McCoy and Abitar Italy-OPS and Real SuperTigres England- Merco, HiMax, PAW, Laser, RCV and Irvine Hungary- Moki Germany- Webra and Graupner Wankel Austria-Webra and HP Russia-MDS and Zeus Japan-Enya, Saito, Zenoah, Mustang 50/Fuji and YS Of all these eighty some engines with all their diversity there is not a bad one among them. I know that someone could pick one out and say, well this brand will turn 13 rpm more than that one, but that doesn't make one good and one bad. I gotta go, Gunsmoke is comming on. |

YS 53

All Time Favorite Engine
Ladyflyer,
I'm surpised at the 53, certainly not YS, why 53? Why not the 63, or the 140? |
All Time Favorite Engine
It was my first YS 4 stroke . :) I had Enya ,OS and Saito before that. The little 53 was head and shoulders above the others. I was VERY impressed . It was that 53 that set the course for all the YS 4 strokes I have bought since.
Since that first 53 I have bought 2 Saitos and 1 OS . One of the Saitos was to replace a worn out 56 and the other was a 100 so I could compare it first hand to the YS 91. ALL the engines outside of that have been YS four strokes . The little 53 is still a JEWEL ! The 91 is probably the most versatile YS however putting out power that no one else approaches in a 91 four stroke. Outside of YS , Enya rates second and Saito/OS are about tied for third place, in my book anyhow. |
well..
YS-45
K&B 61 VECO Then Irvine short behind... I have a Mutunic 65 that is pretty rare if anyone is interested- |
All Time Favorite Engine
OS 1.08FSR. I have 3 of them. Most reliable engine i ever had or seen on others. :p

All Time Favorite Engine
P51, my background is kind of like yours......U/C Stunt until 1964, then out of modeling until 1976 (RC), followed by pattern from '81 until '92. And what a lot of great engines:
My first--K&B 29 on ignition--1946--how exciting to a 6th grade kid! The Ohlson 23 glow--finally, a glow engine that worked well! My Johnson .35s and Johnson stunt engines--love'em! OS 45 FSR, 60 FSR, 61 FSR, and 61 VF--and oh! 46VF! Friendly Super Tigres YS 60 RE Webra 120s Thunder Tiger 46 and 120 Awe.....I like'em all! Clair Sieverling |
All Time Favorite Engine
Dooling 29!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Although if I still had mine I sure wouldn't be flying it :) For CL stunt: Enya 45 model 6001 (an overlooked jewel swamped by the ST 46 but every bit as good). ST G51 (a freight train straight out of the box) Irvine 40RLS (even better than my OS 40VF!!) For RC: Rossi 45 Enya 60/80X |
For LF
So LadyFlyer, I have the right two YSs, a .53FZ and a .91FZ, both are sweet engines but neither has enough seniority here to be my favorites.

Favorite engine
Have quite a few engines that run real well. But I have a super tigre 51 that just never fails me. It pulls an 10x7 apc at 13,000 on the bench and never misses. Just a real nice engine, hope the new Chinese version is as good? I do have others that are great performers and fit the bill real well but the 51 st stands out as a great value.

All Time Favorite Engine
K&B .61 6550. Been running this engine for 15 years. Not as much power as my other.61's but cant seem to wear it out.

All Time Favorite Engine
My all time favorite is a K&B .61 that I've had for 30
years. Second place would probably go to a couple .60 FSR's (yes....60's) and third to my Magnum .91 Four-stroke that I been runnin' for 3-4 years now....what a sweety. |
All Time Favorite Engine
OS .25 FSR
Man what a sweet little engine!! Scott |
I'm a diehard SuperTigre fan! (Italy)
I have an old SuperTigre small case ST60 Ring that I bought for my Sweet-N-Low stik that I scratch built 20+ years ago. It's still on that airplane, and still flying regularly now that I've gotten back into the hobby. Probably over 2000 flights on that aircraft and engine, and untold gallons of fuel through it too. I don't think I have ever had a deadstick landing with that engine (unless I shut it down in flight seeing how many loops and rolls I could do engine out before it was time to land :bananahea )
That is my favorite engine, hands down. I've been disappointed with every other engine that I have, just because of this one engine! :p I just wish they could all be like my ol' ST60! I hope that the new Chinese versions can carry on the tradition... |
All Time Favorite Engine
Como .51, it was my first powerful engine. At least 15 gallons of fuel through it, thats around 30 hours of flying time. I've still got it, not as powerfull as it once was, but still runs good.
|
I'd 2nd the 25 FSR
I have a OS 25 that I run with a 35FP muffler. Can't wear it out. I have it on a sportster 20 and everytime someone asks what kind of 40 is it.

All Time Favorite Engine
Enya .45BB TV
Second engine I ever owned (first being an Enya .29). Excellent power right out of the box, lasted for 5 airplanes/10 years before I finally bent the crank with a really bad case of dumb thumbs. I love Enya engines. |
All Time Favorite Engine
Thanks guys.
Haven't had so much fun in years. You have really made me reflect back on the many fine engines I have had thru the years. Hobbsy - Don't know if I would go as far as you and declare them all fine engines, but each had its own good/bad points, some just more of one or the other. Haven't had nearly the breadth of foreign equipment as you, but liked the OPS(really stout but a bit fussy), Rossi(lots of power and incredibly smooth) and the whole OS FSR series(60, 61, 45, several 25's; beautifully made like the Doolings). Azcat59 - I had forgotten about the Johnsons - good engines and Hell for stout - couldn't break them. Flew mostly Fox 35's later in Stunt and then Combat Specials and Rockets in Combat. Downunder - Never had a Dooling 29, but had a 61. Beautiful and powerful machines. As an engineer it really hurt to see some of them butchered up the way were in speed competition. Flyboy Dave and Ki4ie - How could I have forgotten the Veco/K&B 61 and the 40 for that matter. My first 'modern' RC engine was a 61 Pumper, and I still have one of the old 40's. Again, thanks one and all for a most enjoyable thread. |
