1/4 SCALE 16lb Cub, What engine?

1 Attachment(s)
I have a Balsa USA 1/4 scale cub with an underpowered and worn out OS 108. The plane weighs 16.5 pounds. This plane was build on the heavy side. Balsa USA says it should weigh 12 to 14 pounds and a 120 4 stroke is the biggest engine they reccomend. I am thinking about a Saito 150 as I like to have a little extra punch to get me out of trouble if I need it. I will be flying the plane mostly scale. I sure would appreciate some feed back. Saito 125a or Saito 150?
Thanks
Dave

This is just my opinion of course, but if I were going to have a nice large cub like yours, and equip it with a glow engine, I would put a twin on it. Otherwise, I would go with the very cost effective, and well matched power of the tried and true Zenoah G26 or the new G20ei. For this plane I would probably stick with the std ignition G26, and not worry about feeding it expensive nitro, or charging a hungry ignition battery. The 26 will pull this plane around with more than scale authority, even with floats with an AUW of 20lbs.

I know a guy with a Sig quarter scale cub and he flies it with a ST 2300. Flies at high idle and he showed me half and it was way beyond scale. Myself, I would use a G26 or a twin four stroke. I seen some used ones in the classifieds a while back.

I`VE GOT THIS SAME AIRPLANE WITH A 91 MAGNUM 4 STROKE AND THE TOTAL FLYING W

EIGHT IS 11 POUNDS AND 13 0ZS. THIS PLANE FLYS AT LESS THAN 1/4 THROTTLE AND LANDS AT A VERY SLOW SPEED, IT DOESN`T NEED ANY MORE POWER UNLESS YOU`RE GOING FOR AEROBATICS.
AFRIEND HAS ONE JUST LIKE MINE AND THE PLANE IS THE SAME AS MINE BUT ONLY WEIGHS 11 POUNDS 5 OZ. RCM

Since you posted it in the Gas Engines forum, you could put this on it.

Any 26-30cc gas engine will fly the plane just fine.

Hes not really looking at gas engines...he's looking at Saitos. He posted to the wrong area. I'm sure a Saito 150 will work just fine despite the fact that its not on the recommended list. Those cubs have plenty of "extra" wing....you may end up with more like a clipped wing cub performance....but that sounds like what your after anyways.

Moderator, this thread needs to be moved...

Lessor2- If you are interested in advice on gas engines as well let us know. I can move this to glow engines where you will get more advice on a Saito 150 if that is all you wish to use.

I am just wrapping up an RCU review of the AB Models 1/4 Scale Cub equipped with a YS 1.60... Its a pricey engine but it an absolutely wonderful combination and best of all its a fairly light engine so you would not be adding more fat. . It would easily fly the plane at 16 pounds and balance out nicely. Its just ridiculous power on my Cub at ~13 pounds with an 18x6 prop, 16 pounds should still be an easy task for the engine.

Thanks for all the guidence guys. Yes, I realize I posted in the wrong forum. Please feel free to mov e this to the correct forum. I think I want to stay with glow and keep it as simple as possible. I thought a bout a twin glow, but the cost and the possible need for dual glow drivers made me think a single would be easier.

I built a 1/4 scale cub in warbird color for a friend. We put a twin cyl saito 1.6. The airplane is awesome. Great power, great sound great scale appearance. Not a single downside.

I have an old OS 1.20 Surpass on my Sig 1/4 scale cub, it's a clipped wing and flies very well at 1/3 throttle. More power than it needs at full throttle. It was also built a little on the heavy side at 15 lbs 2 oz.

LESSOR2,

Good lookin' Cub you got there.... If you are dead set on a 4 Stroker, I think the Saito 125 would be perfect. I have a Sig 1/4 Scale full span Cub, that is probably like yours, a little on the heavy side, and I have as OS 120 in mine. The 120 flys the plane with authority, and I rarely hammer the throttle, except when doing loops or inverted flight. I have been hearing great things about Zenoah's little 20c., and you might go that route. If your Cub was like mine, it needed a little weight up front, so a small gasser can help in that area. What is yours covered with, it looks like fabric? Coverite maybe, or solartex....??? Anyway, 'ya gotta love them Cubs, and every one needs at least one Cub in the hanger.
