I blew an engine

My TT61GP was one of my favorite engines and has provided two years of kick-ass performance on a 40-sized trainer that has been clocked at over 175Kph (110 mph) on the straight and level.
Now I'm no sissy-boy, I fly hard-out so this engine was fitted with a tuned pipe and propped to pull around 15,500 on the ground, unloading to about 16,500 in the air -- maybe a little more in those full-power vertical dives ;-) Everyone who saw this engine run and saw the plane it was in fly could not believe just how much power it put out and were amazed to discover that it was only a plain-bearing .61 that cost $85 brand new. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end and today the engine stopped unexpectedly and left me to perform a perfect dead-stick landing, the roll-out stopping at my feet. I went to refuel the plane and noticed the engine wasn't its usual self -- offering some resistance to turning. On close inspection I saw the damage shown in the attached pictures. Yep, I split that baby right down the middle! It's worth noting that this engine has never been crashed and has only ever been in the one airframe. The props were always well balanced and it was run on a diet of 5% nitro and 20% oil (the same hi-castor blend of oil Morgans uses in its Omega fuel). I guess the TT61GP just isn't built to take this kind of punishment but I figure that I sure got my $85 worth of fun out of it. In fact, I'm going to buy another! |
RE: I blew an engine
That's pretty awesome!

RE: I blew an engine
Very Nice XJet!!!
Respect! :D |
RE: I blew an engine
5 minutes silence, please, for a true warrior that died for its country (well, OK, maybe South Waikato).
My commiserations XJet. I hate to see a good engine die like that but it was doing what it loved and its presence on the club's honours board shall last forever. |
RE: I blew an engine
That's what it is all about, pushing it to the limit :D
BTW What prop did you use to get 110mph?? Must have been a good combination! (At least very close to perfect!) |

RE: I blew an engine
Is this another victim of AT40 racing?
Oh well - at least you'll have some spare parts for your new TT61. |

Darnit from the title I thought I was in for some rc porn http://youtube.com/watch?v=RIY_MQ5x4G4 Seriously though, what were you using for a mount and how much nitro (edit: I see you answered this in your original post)? That shouldn't have happened. Bill |
RE: I blew an engine
Try some JB Weld??!! [sm=lol.gif]
At least you got your money's worth from it..... |

Amazing pictures. I wonder if the gouging inside the red circle happened because the case cracked, or if the gouging/binding happened beforehand and caused the case to crack?

RE: I blew an engine
Xjet- what was your oil content in your fuel?
|
RE: I blew an engine
I was wondering about that, too. It looks like something hit the nose of the case HARD, and maybe caused the crack. Maybe the prop kicked up a stone ore something??

RE: I blew an engine
well xjet doesnt look like 85 bucks is going to be what you pay for the next one. i went to look for one and tower shows yours is discontinued. the one that replaced it is 125
old http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXKF93&P=0 new http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXKF99&P=0 hopefully your lhs has some still in stock looks like a superb engine. I had always heard bad things about those engines but i have noticed most of the people who used to say that probably haven't ever actually flown with one either. yours makes for a cooler story :) you should send the photos to them as a testament to the abuse they will take lol. |
RE: I blew an engine
I have this same engine on a Lanier Dart with an 11X7 APC. It really is a wicked speed demon. That Dart is the fastest single engine in my fleet, and one of these days it's just gonna disintegrate in the air.

RE: I blew an engine

RE: I blew an engine
From the damage to the front of the case it looks like a small stone or grain of sand might have gotten lodged between the case and the prop drive and dug itself in, popping open the case.

RE: I blew an engine
that really stinks-glad you got good use and had a lot of fun with it anyway though
sounds like a good engine despite the loss-it served its useful life-i'd buy another engine of the exact same kind R.I.P. nitro engine |
