Somethin' Extra
I have a Sig Somethin' Extra kit just waiting to be finished and I am almost to the point were it's time for my final engine selection.
I recently purchased a Jett 46 and am wondering if this engine would be all right on this airplane or should I find something different. Now the application will be exactly as the SE is for, a whole lotta fun....not a all speed demon. Your comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks Ned |

Somethin' Extra and Irvine 53s go real well together.

Hmmm...
A Jett .46 likes to rev, big time! It will happily spin an APC 10x6 @ 16.5K...That translates to ~90mph...a bit fast for the S/E IMO. According to Dubb Jett it is NOT a good idea to over-prop this engine in order to slow down the revs either...it's simply not set-up to run that way.
My vote is to save the Jett .46 for a speed demon plane and get a decent sport .46 for the S/E. |

there are a lot of good chices for that plane. i use the OS 50 SX and love it, but the Irvine 53, webra 50... would be stupendous also

Although the jet .46 is a great engine, but is really made for a airframe designed for speed. It should fly it well if that is what you have to work with. However the Something Extra was not designed for speed as the wing is much to wide. It is my opinion it is one of the best aerobatic sport airplaned out there. If it were mine, I'd love to see a Irving .53 on it. I have a Saito .56 on mine and believe it to be a great match.

I have a YS .63 bolted to the nose of my SE just waiting to be broken in. Reports from around the globe :) say this is the ultimate pairing of 4-stroke and SE.

I just put 5 or so flights on my SE with my new favorite engine Irvine .53 Everything being new and unfamilliar, I didn't push it much. Take off to vertical and it did keep going up not at any breath taking speeds. Once it gets leaned out and I get the right prop on this baby, I'm gonna have a ball

Interesting! I see they make a gear just for the SE.

Ernie,
Double check the size and make sure it's the taller one to be able to swing the larger prop. |

Quite a few folk have used the 4 Star 60 gear to stretch the legs on their SE as well. I myself use the stock gear and swing 11x6s and 12x4s or 12x5s with my Irvine 53.

I just put a 12x4 on my SE, I do have larger wheels on it, but clearance is not a problem. Not alot of extra room, but it fits.

Chassan,
What about the wheelpants with the larger wheels? |
