Engine Identification and help!

1 Attachment(s)
I Purchased this engine off of RCU several months ago, but I forgot what engine it is. I think that is an OS 1.08 FSR ring engine. the only markings I can locate on the engine is on the side BX-1 and under one of the mounting lugs is either FR, FRI or FR1, the I or 1 (What ever it is) actually looks like a Colon (The Punctuation mark one, not the digestive tract one!) made with two verticle lines, instead of two dots, thus the confusion as to what it really is. Anyway, here is the question part of the post. This engine doesn't seem to have much compression, as I can hear leaking through the carb as I turn the prop. Can I just replace the ring only, then re-break in the engine, or do I need to replace the Piston, Cylinder and Ring?? any help, hints or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have added some pics to help in the identification of the engine..

Thanks again, Craig.

Hi

Before you go tearing it down, run it. You may find it has all the power you need after a good warm-up. Congealed oil some times sticks the ring in place. A good running, loosens it all up and it runs good. Worth a try before you take it apart.

I think that is an OS 1.08 FSR ring engine.

You are correct there.

You can get a replacement ring from Frank Bowman, he is the "ringmaster", I just recieved some rings from him last week. Unless your sleeve has severe damage, you will probably have to reuse it, this is no problem though. The problem is that this engine was discontinued a few years ago and replacement parts are getting scarce.

The engine itself appears good shape on the outside.

Cannot say the same for the header pipe though

Thanks For all the input..   I guess I just really need to run it first to see what kind of numbers I get from it. Will post those numbers when I get them. as far as the Header pipe is concerned, I am probably going to put a Pitts style Muffler on it, since I am planning on using this engine in a 70" GP Revolver. I just don't think that plane would look right with a Tuned Pipe running down it's length!  :)

Anyways, Thanks again for the help and info, its greatly appreciated.

Craig.

SeaJay have the same engine OSMAX BX-1 1.08 with a davis diesel head `18x8 prop been a while since I have run it sorry do not remember the revs up there with the gassers but I had to put a 15 inch
piece of a steel I beam on the bottom of the test stand so it stayed put, martin

Holy Sheee, er Shoot!  That's a lot of power!!  I usually just bolt my test stand to a 21' flat bed trailer, I do however need to reinforce my home built test stand, A engine that powerful would tear it up as It sits now!!    I don't think I am ready to go diesel, but I will have to consider it for future project...  \

Hmm, I have an Ultra Sport 1000 with a Super tiger g3000 (S3000?) I wonder how much power that would put out on that Ultra Sport?  can you say Unlimited vertical, Boys and Girls?  :)

Thanks again..

Craig.

Run it before taking it appart, ringed engines often feel like they have bad compression specially if they sat a long time without being used it also take a long time before the ring sit propelly. the old K&B .40 used in sport-40 Hydro class took a gallon of fuel trough it before ready to race!
