Old dope and silk
I have bought some old dope and hobby poxy and lots of silks from an old hobby shop. the owner passed away last week. I bought the pile of boxes of spray dope and brush on dope and a few boxes of silk. If interested I will inventory it all in the next few weeks and sell off some of it. PM me or email at [email protected]

If you need dope, try http://www.brodak.com/ as Brodak's dope is the best ever. I have used almost all brands of dope throughout some 65 years of modeling. Brodak's is top. It is a derivative of Randolph. I find it better than Sig's dope as Sig's is just rebottled Randolph. Brodak's does better as there is a difference.
For brush-on dope you might like using the foam-paddles now available. They make dope application much better than a brush. Camel Hair brushes are far too expensive and besides now they are all squirrel hair regardless of the label.
Hey I still have some Nitrate dope that I liberated from an Air Force Base, Nouessier (sp??) Morroco, when on alert there back in the early '60s. It still works, but mostly a keep-sake now.

Hi everyone,
I am strictly using fabric and dope.
I found that the dope purchased at the local hobby store is highly diluted so we need many more coats and labor.
I now purchase my dope from Leavens that sell Randolph to full size airplane refinishers.
I need 3 times less coats and 3 times less labor and three times less cost.

Hello guys,
I wonder if you guys are talking "genuine silk" made by the worms or the imitations that are sold these days which I undestand to be polyester with a silk like surface finish.
Zor
Edited to change "make by the worms" to "made by the worms"

RE: Old dope and silk
Being a product of the 60's and all of the life changing/altering/shaping things that went along with that...is there anything that smells better than dope? I can't be the only one, right? My brother and I would stay up till 3 in the morning with either silk span or silk and dope building airplanes with control lines or escapements or galloping ghosts (gasp!). Sorry....had a brief flash back for a minute....

Yes, I'd be interested in some dope and expecially some silk.

As for the great smell of dope. I remember when I was just starting building stick and tissue models back in the middle and late thirties...we had a hobby shop downtown that my dad would take me to and I can still remember the smell of dope when we walked in. Talk about nostalgia!

85 years old and still building and flying these 75 years..happiness for sure...maybe when I grow up, I'll quit.

The great smell of dope is only slightly exceeded by the smell of banana oil. Just what was banana oil anyway? At my age now I wonder how many brain cells were destroyed by those early days of dope, and benzene laced fuel, and Ambroid, and (what was the other popular tube glue), and spray can fumes? But we never sniffed any of it intentionally.

Actually the old Banana Oil we refer to is Isopropyl Acetate....the old acetate dope...today, unless you order this type of dope from one of the mail order shops taht specialize in stuff like that, you wil get buterate (spelling) dope...smells pretty much the same....my ex-wife (thank God and Greyhound, she's gone...) used to raise caini about the smell of model airplane dope in the house...then she would do here nails with stuff that smelled the same\Frank Schwartz

Hi All,
I still have an empty can of Berry Brothers aceto butyrate dope.
Also a can of Berry Brothers reducer still 1/4 full (3/4 empty _ )
I have always finished my planes with genuine aircraft dope using good ventilation blowing the air away from me to the outdoors. I brush it on. I do not spray.
But the smell of dope is priceless for some of us.
No expensive perfume can beat it I am serious.
A dope finish will stay thight without wrinkles for over 50 years.
We do not see old full size fabric covered light planes wrinkling even when parked (tied down) in the sun for a long time. Same for models finished the same way.
I am still using fabric and dope (Randolph) these days.
Enjoy a durable finish.

I do not really know.
I was using Berry Brothers when I was near Montreal, Quebec province in the 50s and early 60s.
I moved to near Toronto, Ontario in 1964 and Berry was not retailed here so I switched manufacturer.
I used a bit of that retarder a couple of years ago while doping in very high humidity and it seemed to still be effective.

All you guys are making me feel young! Prettiest plane I ever finished was silkspan and AeroGloss dope in a black and yellow pattern on a CL Ringmaster back around 76. I haven't used a dope finish since the mid 80s but am starting a Sig 4*120 and considering a dope finish for it.
I do remember spilling some dope on a brand new kitchen table. It soaked through the newspapers really fast and Mom was very mad when the finish came right off of that table!

I think so. I just gave one away. It had a rc carb equipped K&B 35 installed, and needed recovering. It had silkspan with a bare minimum of dope over it.
