RE: Phil Krafts Original Ugly Stick
Hey IfIf thanks for posting the video. I have never made the connection between the song and the ugly stik or any other stik. You will be pleased to know I have a pristine 45rpm copy of snoopy vs the red baron. I can play it on my guitar and have played this song for many years. Have you ever heard the flip side of SvRB? It is one of the best blues songs I have ever heard title "I Needed You". Oh lordy does it have soul. I don't know that you will ever find it but heck, it may be on youtube.
I love the "Snoopy" series of songs. Why in the world can't we be so innocent and simple again. What in the world have we became? Sorry, I just miss my youth.
Well guess what? Here it is. Lol.

Well, yeah, that Royal Guardsman blues is right on. In their videos, they are obviously influenced by the British Invasion bands, but it sounds like they were drawing their music from the same source as the Brits, American blues. Great tune, all I knew of them was their commercial Snoopy stuff. I was 15 in 1966, and Snoopy and the Royal Guardsman were everywhere. If Phil Kraft were alive I'd ask him if the Snoopy craze or the Royal Guardsman's songs didn't have anything to do with settling on the final Stik design. It just doesn't seem like a coincidence, that they came up with this red and white cartoon like world war 1 plane, exactly when the media was saturated with Snoopy vs. the Red Baron.

Why all caps?
Anyway, I didn't use a jig on mine. If you have the ribs laser cut, then they should have tabs so you can build it on a normal flat board.

For what it's worth and what you can with an Ugly Stick, Here are a few pic of one that is about 20 years old and still flying. Powered by a O.S. Max 61, J R 7202 radio. The wings are swept with no diheadral and a flying stab. The wing was moved forward to allow for CG for the swept wing. So the nose is a little shorter. Running on home made trike landing gear and small wheels. All the ribs have been lightened, however, it didn't lighten it much. Covered in Yellow transparent MonoKote and Monokote graphics. Even though this is scratch built and modified, it's still an Ugly Stick.

A very nice looking model, but I have always understood that a flying stab meant the entire stabilizer rotated on a pivot. It looks like you are using elevators attached to the stabilizer. In any event, I like the looks of the transparent yellow!

You're right, a flying stab in modelling terms means the whole stab moves. Maybe I should have said, lifting stab. The stab provides lift over the ribs and the elevator changes the lift like flaps or ailerons on a wing. I hesitate using the term "built up" stab bacause in modelling terms "built up" usually means a stab that is hollow but not necessarily having an air foil, instead of saying " slab stab".
I think the lifting stab just looks so much better than the original slab stab.

RE: Phil Krafts Original Ugly Stick
Does anyone have a PDF of the original Ugly stick plans? I see the other that was posted in this thread but when I opened it, it appeared to be broken up in about 20 smaller sheet or tiles.I'm looking for a full sheet set like those that came in the original kits. Thanks.

Back in the early 80s we had a tail dragger big stick with a Quadra on it, talk about a floater.
The little one with a TD051 had many hours at the local schoolyard, Kraft kps4 and 3 kps 10 servos.
