Default Old F-106 kit

I dont know that this qaulifies as vintage but 20 years ago somebody made a 40 size semiscale F-106. It had the engine mounted in the front. Anybody remember this.

I think that it might have been a Flite Line Models kit.

Yep. Riley Wooten kitted an F-106 down at Flite Line. It was 40 size. It has a flat plate wing and though it flew OK, it was pretty limited on what it would do. Go fast and do fast rolls was about it as I recall. That would have been in the mid 70s, near as I can recall.

I remember that one. I had the kit and gave it to my buddy to build. Had a Fox 40 on it and needed a real high angle of attack to get the plane to rotate. As with all delta type planes it was limited to loops, rolls[extremely fast], inverted, high speed passes, and a drop out of the air glide if you were unlucky to have a dead stick. Still it was fun.
We're much too sophisticated to really enjoy simple stuff anymore, aren't we?

I've got one of those Global Cutlass models (the smaller version). I've been afraid to fly it because of a lot of bad things I've heard about that design (mostly the larger version). Same type of performance mentioned here for the F106. Mine has elevons, no landing gear and a Cox TD .09 (no throttle). Hand launch and go like hell - land in grass.

Guess I'll have to get brave enough to try it someday.

You can fly that one as you were smart enough to use the lightest motor that would fit on it. I had 3 of those and they did fly,but I replaced a lot of wood and lightened up the cores to save as much weight as possible. Still the Cox 09 [ pre Estis ] model puts out the power of a mild sport 15 and will give you the best chance for a launch. We used to launch them by a catapult, really a pole in the ground and a 30" rubber cord. This was also how we launched small 1/2A ducted fan models. Use a 7/3 prop on the 09 to keep the RPM's up

I have what I figured to be a 1950's f-86 aluminum control line kit with tiger pulse jet engine. Can anyone tell me anything about it?

Thanks
Dennis

The tigre pulse motor brings back a few pleasent memories for me. I got one and a Mig 15 when I was in Korea in the 60's. Couldn't get the thing to run on any type of gas but in desperation we used K&B 1000 and a glow plug and it lit off. Had this really neat tail on it just like a comet. Never did get to fly the plane and it's probably buried in a landfill over there somewhere. I still have the motor.

Butch Sickels in Texas did a 106 semi kit a while back for ducted fan power. Here is one of those with turbine power (Ram 500 I believe).
I'm surprised we don't see more of these jets.

Not an F-86 but a link to a flying vid I found of a Mig 15 - perhaps the engine you're talking about?

IIRC, Fliteline also had an F-105; did it fly any better than the 106 - since being of a more conventional planform?

Sure have! That aircraft was often a topic of conversation around these parts...
The Rome Academy of Aero Modeling flew off from the old WWII runway at Griffiss AFB (Home of the 49th FIS) from the early 70's until 2002...the Base Commander actually started the model airplane club.

I had my first successful R/C flights on the west side of the field flying from the Grffiss taxi way. I had one successfully flight. On the second flight we forgot to wind the escapement. The model flew away to the east over the active runway and probably landed in the construction area for the new SAC runway. Next day I and Russ Greenberg took a T-33 and flew over the woods to the east but of course we never saw the model again. We always suspected that one of the construction workers found the model.

P.S. I was on active duty in the 27th F.I.S. flying the f-94C at that time.
