Joe or John, looking at the Texaco UBF-7 NC 155Y and Chris Woods UBF-7 NC 13071 I noticed that there seems to be less stringers on the side of 13071 then 155Y. I have a very good picture of 13071 and don't think I'm seeing things. Can ether of you tell if that is true. Is it one of the many differences of these planes.
It certainly appears to me that the middle stringer on the side of NC13071 is missing. Factory pictures of both the QCF-2 and UBF-2 show this stringer in place, but it sure doesn't show up on the picture of 13071. All the pictures I have of F-2s show this stringer in place.

Cheers!

Joe and John, I think my brain is going. I called them UBF-7's . 13071 is definitely a F2 and I thought 155Y was also. . Joe, the middle stringer is there, it is hard to see on my upload. There are only three on the side of 13071. The top one is in line with the bottom edge of the metal sheeting around the cockpits, the middle one is in the center of the maroon trim, the third you can see. John, if you could check stringers on F2's it would sure help me out. From what I have learned about these Waco's is many where custom built so a diff in the amount of stringers is possible.

Thanks

Bob

Bob,

NC 155Y is a UBF-2 and seems to have gone thru a number of changes over the years with different headrest/turtldecks and engines.

I missed the part about 13071 being a UBF, just saw the F-7 and thought you were talking UPF-7. Didn't look at the picture too close either, sorry abou the confusion.

P1 NC 155Y with the original small headrest
P2 NC 155Y with a medium size headrest and possibly a Wright 760 engine
P3 NC 155Y with the large headrest/turtle deck, Wright Engine and adjustable prop
P4 NC 155Y today with a Continental R670 engine and large headrest/turtle deck

Thanks John, 13071 appears to have the original small headrest If you have access to a a F2 with the original headrest would you measure it for me.

Thanks John

Bob,

It might be a couple of weeks, the St Louis area is just digging out of the latest snow storm and more is expected this weekend. I'll also try to get a straight on picture of the head rests and some more detail pictures of the sides showing the stringers and I will count the stringers at the rear cockpit wall/headrest on all UBFs and QCFs available just for comparison. Terry, the Waco mechanic, did mention on one of the UBFs that the rear area where the stringers ended was not correct (I think it was NC 12002) and will be corrected at the next overhaul.

John,
Well you got me going for the scale look so I got some pics soing the progress I made on my tail wheel, I'd have to admit it has turned out nice so far all I have to do now is flair it to shape. I just wish my engine and motor mount would show up so I can get everything on the front end taken care of so I can set what ever blind nuts I may need so I can mount everything on. I have one of the mufflers from slimline coming so I can mount the engine on its side, and I should be able to straddle two of the blisters with the valve cover on the engine. Well here is the pics for ya'll to look at.

John, I found a few pics that show the F2 stringers pretty well except for aft termination point. I think they answered my question about spacing. However I have another, can you give me the lower wing span?. I think it is 27'-5" but not sure. Attached pictures small, hope you can see them

Found more, got enough on stringers now.

Thanks
Bob

Bob,

I'll add it to the list to measure and I will try to get some photos of the covered stringers as well. I will also touch base with the owner and try again to get some detailed 3 views. Have you received anything from NASM? I have not.

To All,
Perhaps someone here can help me out,
The N struts on our model, are they in fact FUNCTIONAL? I got into a heated argument with a few guys about this, I said they were and a couple of the guys said no, they are for show.
my reply to them was "then why are they attached to a bracket in each wing"?
I got no reply and that ended it.but, just to be on the safe side was I correct in stating that?

George,

The interplane struts on the Pica model are very much functional. Don't try flying yours without them. They keep the realitive incidence on the outer wing panels from changing in flight. These wings are not very strong as a single unit, but they are strong enough to not require flying and landing wires. The biggest problem with not using them would be in the area of the wing joiner pieces. These little short joiners and the fact that the root ribs are only made from balsa would virtually guarentee wing failure without the interplane struts. Those who say that they are not functional, could be invited to show how well their Waco flys without them. They probably don't have one though.

Bill,
Thanks for the quick reply,
and you are correct, they don't have a WACO, but I come to realize over the years that there are a few in every club,They seem to think they know it all, where in fact they know very little especially in this case.
Thanks again,

George

John, thanks again. You don't know how much your help is appreciated. Sorry to say I have not ordered any drawings yet.[] I guess I had better get to it.

Sure is windy here today. I spent most of the morning making the rudder trim tab brackets and cutting the trim tab from the rudder. It ought to look nice.

I talked briefly with damifino last night, and he told me that his computer had crashed a couple of weeks ago. He will be back with us shortly.

Did he say it was the weather, trim or radio failure?

Hi Guys,
I thought I would drop in and show a couple pics of my 1/4 Waco. We have had 15" of snow here in the past 24 hrs so it was a good excuse to get some work done on the Waco.
Later!!

LOL,
This plane has cost me more money in balsa, ply and spruce than I care to count up not to mention the $200 I just dropped for fiberglass parts and wing strut material. It is encouraging to see it finally taking shape.

Hi,

Sorry to go slightly off topic here, but does anyone here have photo's or details of the white light fitted in the rudder of a WACO SRE?
I'm building a 1/6th scale one from plans, but want to do as much of the detail in true scale...

Thanks,
Kim

I'm sure that Skylarkmk1 will have some. He is the historian for our group. You are welcome to join the group if you wish. The Waco Brotherhood is open to all who like Waco's, and is not limited to the UMF/YMF group.

Here are some pictures of the rudder lights from other waco's. They are not from the SRE, but are representative of the lights that mount atop the rudder. I think that the SRE used a light in the rear of the rudder trailing edge, but again, John will have the best information,

Thanks. Yes, he's already been so very kind to send me a CD with photos, but unfortunately I still need to see the light in the rudder, which is indeed in the trailing edge according to my plans, which show only a side view.

How do I join?
Just ask.

I belong to the National Waco Club (full scale). You can go to www.nationalwacoclub.com
There you can find some photo's of the originals, and some even show the light in the trailing edge of the rudder. Sorry, but that site will now allow anyone to copy a photo and move it elsewhere. Have a look. It's in the photo section, by model.
