STICKBUILDER,
THE reference to age re:AMA6416 was only that today is not the first day I've glued two pcs. of balsa togeather , even tho I sometimes think it is.
I guess my one question is -which plan set is most preferable to build a 1/4 scale WACO?RCPLANMAN
By far, the best quarter scale Waco model on the market is the Peter Barth kit. All the rest of them have tons of deficiencies to overcome, and many of them are major (to the point of needing to redraw the plan and cut new parts). Ask Anthony (Waco Nut). I'm going to start my 27% version derived from a set of factory drawings that a gentleman was kink enough to give to me. These appear to be the Original Waco archive drawings that were rendered in 1/10th scale. They are lacking nothing, and even show things that modellers have not idea about (chain plates for example). I won't be drawing a normal set of plans, but will be doing an outline with the locations and building notes pencilled in. Dick Watz is currently working on drawing a set of plans for the UPF for the Brotherhood. These will become property of the Waco Brotherhood, and will be available for any Brother to use, but will not ever be offered as a commercial venture. They will be Copyrighted, and all rights will be reserved. You will be able to build all of them you want, but you won't see them as a kit.

I don't know if any of you ever saw any of Dick's plans (Aerodrome), but they are the best plans that you will ever build from.

Bill R.

I would look at the Barth kit through Proctor http://www.proctor-enterprises.com/p...s/products.htm . Anthony (Waconut) and others who have built from the Pepino 1/4 scale YMF plans will tell you that they are poorly drawn and require lots of effort to correct the mistakes and to keep going on the project. From what has been reported, the Barth kits are the way to go for 1/4 scale. Model Builder had plans for a 1/4 scale Waco Taperwing (plan # 11811), I found my copy on that "auction" site along with plans for a 1/6th Waco RBA by International Aircraft Research. Cleveland Model and Supply Co has 6 different and less common Wacos that they can print as 1/4 scale BUT they are just enlarged copies of rubber powered planes so you would have to engineer the structure for ¼ scale.

A much longer list of Plans, Kits, Parts and other resources can be found on the House of Moy site http://www.houseofmoy.com/waco/

Hey Guys

I just won this Pica 1/6 waco for $51 on ebay. May have to bend new cabane struts. http://cgi.ebay.com/WACO-YMF-3-BIPLA...QQcmdZViewItem

I figure I'll start small and see how I like it. I built this one and looking back it was 25 years ago........jeesh!

Hope you aren't like those Harley guys when I pull out my KYMCO 250 scooter, now that I'll be building a smaller one!

Congratulations!! Just so you know, I had a $60 bid in at the 15 second mark and changed my mind. Too many other projects.

Glad to see that it went to a brother. Enjoy the build.

Hello all,
Well, I sanded the stick back down as best as I could. I had to get more primer so off to the auto store. I found a can of white primer way in the back of the shelf so I got it thinking the yellow would cover better over white. I used the light gray primer on the Waco and stick first. I also bought a qt of paint prep the sales man said it cleans off any oil or dirt before painting. The yellow paint covered over the white primer much better then the gray I’m thinking of sanding the gray off the Waco and using the white. The paint job turned out good this time but I was a little disappointed with the shine.

Jim Henley
The solartex was vary easy to use I used the silver but I think next time I will use white.

Thanks. I would still have won. I wanted this badly to be involved with the build and to bring back some nostalgia. I remember the manual saying not to be afraid to use a 45 instead of a 60. Do you think a 52 four stroke swinging a 12 inch prop might be able to fly it?

WOW, this thread is still growing strong. I remember when I first emailed Bill asking to be a brother LOL
I heard rumor that someone is providing a short kit of the 1/5th, is this true?

He was in here a few pages ago. I don't know if any of the Brothers has bought the kit (long or short) yet. He has not been back since then though. Maybe I should not have asked him where he got the parts templates.......[:-]

Hughes500,

The company producing the short kit of the 1/5th PICA WACO YMF is Richwood R/C Kits http://www.rckitmasters.com/ and is owned and run by Patrick and Marsha Mahoney. The parts are CNC Routed, not laser cut. Charlie (Lazy Ace) I believe ordered a kit to build for another flyer. He was/is going to compare his build to the short kit but we have not heard any report as of yet.

Patricks deffinition of the kits has been upgraded. "Complete Kits will now be named/known-as Long Kits, and Partial Kits will be named/known-as Short Kits."

"Long Kit - This kit contains all of the wing ribs, fuse formers, and pre-bent wire parts such as the cabane and landing gear wire, and a set of printed plans. Construction manual provided on CD-Rom. Note Although we call this a Long kit, you must supply the balsa sticks, and sheeting to complete this project. We supply you with all templated parts."

"Short Kit - This kit contains all of the wing ribs, fuse formers, and other wood parts from templates. Includes the plan set and construction manual on CD-Rom. This kit does not include pre-bent wire parts.

"Wire Parts Kit - This kit contains only the cabane, tail wheel, and landing gear bent wire parts.

Based on the plans presented on his site, they are the older plans (pre 1990) with the tail wheel mounted at the rudder post. These are the same plans that are on the House of Moy site http://www.houseofmoy.com/waco/ and Patrick does mention the HoM site under the plans section of his site. The Pica plans from the AMA are the newer (1990) plans with the tail wheel moved forward to the scale location. Don't forget to ask for the templates when ordering from the AMA.

They are both 1/5 scale .The yellow one is Supercubmans ymf5 ,a beutiful replica of a local full size,I stuck more to the plans with mine being a novice builder. Both are covered with solartex and painted with krylon.Jims is powered by a g23 and mine a g26.

Jim used silver solartex with grey krylon primer covered with yellow krylon..I used white solartex and white krylon without primer. My model was just completed as the cold weather set in this fall so she will fly in the spring.I painted two other models the same way ,a smith miniplane about three years ago and a dhc beaver about two years ago. Both have seen plenty of sunshine and so far have not sagged or yellowed.Just luck I guess.

Aileron differential is by all means beneficial to the Waco YMF model. I set mine at 50%. The YMF is a tad lazy aroung the roll axis, but then again, so is the full scale. Adding the differential kills off most of the adverse yaw, but you still need to use rudder on your turns. It looks wierd when someone tries to fly a Waco aggressively, as in lots of angles and dangles.

OK Guys, there are 126 of us, if each one orders just one T-Shirt, we will just about have the 144 needed. Remember, spring is just around the corner, (unless you live in Florida) and we all need a new T-shirt to start the flying season. I have my order in with Bill for 2. Send Stickbuilder (Bill) a PM with your order TODAY !!!

Hey Guys....
I am drawing up the Pica Fuse parts from the AMA plan in Solid Edge. So Far I have found some interesting disconnects... F-21 in particular. Has anyone created a 3-D model of the 1/5? Solid Edge, Solid Works, or Pro-E?

On another point... was watching a Pica kit on E-bay... older model (yellow and white)... Closed yesterday at $407! I think I can cut my own for a few dollars less.
