Default I'm going back to the good old days

I think I have lost my mind. If anyone finds it please don''t send it back. I''m having to much fun. I bought out a bunch of RC stuff from a buddy. Then got on this site. I forum for these old planes has just captured my fancy as they were popular back when I was a kid. My father had several of the planes talked about on this forum. I remember the live wire trainer and a plane with a six foot WS that looked a lot like a Curtis Robin.
Anyway I have just gone Ga Ga over these oldies. I have scronged up some oldtimie plans and an old timeie kit from E-bay.The nostalga from a simpler time has me firmly in it''s grip.
I have a couple newer/new radios that I intend to use. Just how far do some of you guys go back to the good old days?

If we went back we would probably want to stay there. I have a plane I built in the 50''s, These new radios drive me nuts, and can''t get used to this 3 & 4 D stuff. I can remember getting dizzy and falling on my ?????????? Then built my first radio and then is when I really got my self in trouble I WAS HOOKED, That was over 60 years ago Man how time fly''s.

Live Wire, I can agree with the 3 D stuff. It doesn't thrill me at all. I do like the gental floating of an airplane, that is doing what full scale airplanes can do. All my life I have loved airplanes but once we got outta the 40's I lost intrest in jets etc. I still like the golden age of aviation. Doesn't matter if its a model or full sized.
One of my friends has a 48 Fairchild, a R24 I think. What a wonderful airplane, mohair upholstry. Real glass roll up windows. 200 HP ranger engine. What a plane

I just think this old timer model stuff is great. Do you guys use old time radio equipment also? How about old time motors?

Older Nut, There is a guy that is on the forums BobHH from Holly Springs NC (early RC Models)and he flys a lot of the old radios from the 50s. I am sure there are a lot of others. I got my Live Wire Senior plans in the mail today and the kit should be here next week. My Live Wire Trainer Kit should be here tomorrow or friday. Can't wait to get started!! Cheers Bill

Yep Oldernut, if you get a chance to make the Mid-South Vintage RC Society Fly-in this Memorial Day weekend up here in the Raleigh, NC area you will see all types of vintage aircraft, radios and guys who enjoy them all. You will see some displays of some of the vintage equipment as well as hear some vintage engines run as we waved the muffler rule to allow the period engines that have no mufflers. Last year you could hear the K&B Greenhead .45 bark as well as an old O&R .60!!

Here are a few pictures of my flying models as well as a display I use at club talks and such. This year will include my old Little Esquire with a Galloping Ghost system that “Jayman†refurbed for me. I generally have around 6 to 7 vintage radios ready to fly all the time. I enjoy the challenge of flying them. It took a great deal of skill level in those days. Remember…. No trim levers, mixing or even joysticks on some!!! Some you had to tune the radio before each flight!

Heck, today some guys have problems with tuning an engine. Even had a guy listening in on a conversations a few years back and asked how he could lean out his electric motor!!!!! Told him to tweak the needle valve on his ESC!!!

Great Pictures Bob. Thanks for showing them. I will try to get to Raleigh for the Memorial day program. It's only about 3 hrs away. That is If I don't forget. I can remember things clearly from 40 years ago but can't remember what I had for lunch yesterdayI have a question about Sitka Spruce. I have a bunch left over form my full scale build. Is there any reason I shouldn't use it for longerons and Spars? Other then the weight of couse.
I ordered a short kit for the Live Wire from Bob Holman. Also an assortmant of balsa from Balsa USA. I should be all set.

Oldernut, I would surly us it for spars and such. Some good wood. Its getting harder to find good spruce these days. I've been buying planks and cutting it myself.

Check out the picture of yours truly hand launching the Live Wire Trainer. That model was built in the early 60's, covered in silk and dope. The gentleman just added a modern radio (single channel) cleaned up the OK Cub .14? and brought it out to fly a few years back at the fly-in!! It flew great!!!

I love the older airframes, but I'll have to admit to using moder radio gear and modern engines.

Anyone notice that all the apostrophes and quotation marks have recently doubled or trippled in length? RCU must have a bug.

Good morning all,

The weather is warm but the wind is blowing enough that I am a little worried about the pear tree in the front yard. They split easily.
Anyway I have a question about motors. As you may all know I have ordered a short kit for the Live Wire trainer. I have a Thunder tiger .07. Do you guys know if that will work on the LW? I suppose I'm a little premature in asking.

Oldernut, My dad and his friends flew .075 and .09 diesels 1952-1956 and they were sluggish but the radio gear(single channel) was heavier. Are you going to go single or more channels? Here are the original specs: The first brochure says wt. with RC...35oz and any 09 diesel or glow. The later brochure says wt. 26oz minus RC and .09-.15. HiPlains put an 07 on his but I do not know if he has flown it yet. Maybe he will speak up. I guess I really did not answer the question but the more info the better. Keep us posted. Cheers Bill

Bill,
I was planning on three channels. I don't think the .07 is a very powerful engine. But then I have a lot to learn. I am really looking forward to this build. Take my time check every piece. A little white glue. Ahhhh man sounds like heaven to me. Next step figure out what to cover it with. Any ideas?
Yes, maybe HiPlains will jump in.

Yes, I have mounted the TT.07 in my LW Trainer. But I have it on a plate that is bolted to the rails so it can be replaced with a bigger motor if needed. On the original design a Cub .09 is shown with an 8-5 prop, so Hal was not shooting for very much power. A gentle climb with a few turns seemed to be the mission in 1952. With the modern radios, the weight is reduced by about a half pound, so the flight speed required for 1952 performance is also less.

Oldernut, Here is Dave Segals recent build a Live Wire Trainer II with a .15 on it. Like me he is waiting for the weather conditions to improve. I haven't seen a year that has been as windy as it has here in the past couple of months. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7163439/tm.htm If you are going to go 3 channel you may want to consider a larger engine you can always throttle back. Thing about the old high wing Live Wires is thay don't fly pretty when you fly em fast.

I think it will fly with the .07 if kept light, but I would go for an .09 or a .10. The .07 spins a very small prop, and the LW is a fat airplane. With a bit larger engine you'll get a nicer sound from a bigger, slower turning prop, and no worries about power. It will still be in character - not way overpowered. Have you ever flown with an OS .10 FP and an 8 inch prop? The sound is so pleasant. I'm sure a TT .10 is much the same. The 2 1/2 ozs of extra weight (.10 vs. .07) will not be an issue, and will probably be helpful for balance.

I think I can scrouge up an Enya .09 or a OS .10 off of ebay. If I can find a good one.

Wow, way cool. I built a Nobler, must have been about, ?? some years ago.(a long time ago) I think I crashed it pretty quickly. I am still waiting for my Sportster and Live Wire Trainer. I have also followed the Quacker 54 build with great intrest.
I have a Sig Hog Bipe that is just about done. This oldimer thing has really got me. I will build the oldtimers and put my radio gear in them instead of the Bipe.

A little off track. I fly control line. I've been flying mostly Old Time Stunt. This is for airplanes up through 1952 and we fly the 1951-52 pattern. I'm able to fly at five "local" contests a year plus go out to Tuscon for a week in March to the Vintage Stunt Contest. That's the high point of my year.

I learned to fly clockwise and then switched to flying counterclockwise with the handle upside down. Flew that way for 50+ years. Built a Hearns Demon, an Australian design. The slide in fuel tank was the last thing. Started making it and realized something is wrong. I had built the airplane to fly clockwise. Took it slow and easy. The airplane has about 100 flights on it and has made it through four contests. My scores are about 30 points down from flying the other way, but I am improving. I don't have any trouble switching back to my other airplanes. So, at 72, the old dog has relearned an old trick. I am pleased with myself.

Jim, you are not off base ! If it were not for people like this http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7144487/tm.htm view entire thread, none of us would be flying anything! Harold Debolt would have never made a Live Wire Trainer if he had never made a Speed Wagon or a Stunt Wagon. I can't think of any pioneer modeler that started out flying radio! Don't know maybe I am wrong! Cheers Bill
