Waco YMF Colors
Does anyone know where I could get information on colors used in the Waco YMF? I am trying to match the full size colrs used on a 1/5 scale Pica kit.

RE: Waco YMF Colors
mattis,
Which era YMF? The original Golden era WACo built planes or the newer (1986+) YMFs built by Waco Classic Aircraft? I have a copy of the original YMF F-3/F-5 colors of the WACo YMFs by S/N or registration number and the colors of the first 47 (S/N and or registration) aircraft by WCA. The original color list was/is available from the National Waco Club (and was includes in the original Platt Manual) and I believe you can get the colors for the new YMFs from WCA. The new list is a modeler’s guide with plenty of asterisks (**).
Example #1; F5009, NC14081 (built in 1987 by WCA) from the new list.
Base color Q-1916 White*
Stripe color H-9170 Bahama Blue*
Accent color M-9502 Insignia Blue*
.
The only problem is that NC 14081 does not have the accent color on it today.
Example #2; 3944, NC 14031 (built by WACo, the Pica kit and Paul Matt subject plane) from the old list.
Base color Insignia Blue
Stripe color Cream
Leading Edge color Cream
NC 14031 has been restored to the original colors but with out the additional personal markings of the previous owner.
Example #3: 3836, NC 14041 (built by WACo, photos on the NWC site)
Base color Vermilion Fuselage, fin and rudder
Base color Cream Wings and horizontal tail surfaces
Accent color Vermilion panels in Wings
Stripe color Black arrow edged in gold
Early photos (B/W) show NC 14041 with an upper wing and fuse apparently in vermilion and cream edges, cream lower wing and rudder. Today (color photo) it is all red with checker board stripe, cowl bumps, wing stripes and wheel pant stripes.
You will also need to know the manufacture of the original dope colors as the same color name in Randolph Dope is not the same color Poly-Fiber paints. If it is possible to find out what the color number is (i.e.; Q-1916 White* or H-9170 Bahama Blue*) and what kind of finish, dope or other. The list is a starting point; photos can help you sort out what is correct for your subject. Contact Randolph and get the color charts (with sample chips).

RE: Waco YMF Colors
Can you email or fax me a copy of the original YMF color list that you have. I did not see it on the National Waco Club website. Email is [email protected], fax is 407-977-6415.

RE: Waco YMF Colors
I have never used latex paint on a RC model before so I have some questions. First of all I have the Randolph color chips so I can locate the colrs that I need for a match at Home Depot. Once I get the paint mixed what equipment do I need to apply it? My spray unit is a Pasche Compressor that goes to 40 psi and I have several nozzles. Will that work? If so, how much do I need to thin the paint? How many coats? Do I need a clear coat on top? Is it fuelproof for nitro? Finally what do you recommend for a covering? I have used Solartex with great results. Any help would be appreciated since I have only painted with polyurethane or lacquer based paints before. Also, what about Krylon or Rustoleum as a substitue for latex? It is not fuelproof but can take a clear coat of a paint like Top Flite clear or Hanger 9 clear. Thanks.

RE: Waco YMF Colors
Latex should really be sprayed through an HVLP gun(High Volume/Low Pressure)
I thin the Latex roughly 40% using blue windshield washer fluid and add Floetro(conditioner) purchased at Home Depot. Latex is gas proof but not nitro proof, you will need a clear coat. Krylon is the same as far as fuel proofing.

Is there a reason you don't want to use Randolph dope? I've used Brodak dope which is relabeld Randolph and Randolph dope which I bought through Aircraft Spruce. The color is amazing.

I wanted to use Randolph Dope or there polyurethane on my Waco but I looked at the website and didn't see how I could come ou with anything less than a $100 expense for ONE COLOR when you consider buying there solvent and catalyst? Did you spend less?

RE: Waco YMF Colors
I will check, any personal recommendations? I am also looking at Klass Kote as a substitute for latex, they mix custom colors as Randolph for free and the paint can be aplied with anything from an air brush to a larger compressor. Any experience with either Klass Kote or (different subject) Nelson Paints (also water based)?

Nelson produces an excellent product. It can be brushed, or sprayed.
I believe that he can do custom colors, too.
Best bet would be to call him. I found Jerry to be personable, and quite informative.
Using Nelson paint, my Spacewalker was sprayed using both conventional, and HVLP guns. I'm very happy with the results.
