Default 84" Quaker maiden flight

We had wonderful weather in Omaha today. It was 65F with 5 to 8mph winds out of the south/southwest. I have a Quaker with an 84" wingspan that I trimmed to look like a PT-19 just for the fun of it. I decided it was the perfect day for a maiden flight.

The plane is outfitted with a Magnum XL .52 RFS and a Master Airscrew 12x6 K-series prop. It flew wonderfully, and after the initial take-off and trimming, I passed my RDS8000 transmitter around and let a number of guys at the field take a turn. Having such a fun, relaxing day out at the flying field only serves to punctuate what a drag winter is going to be.

BigEd,
"what a drag winter is going to be." Put some floats or skis on it and have fun in the winter.

Floats are a great idea. We don't get enough snow for skis....

Actually most of us at my club never use skis; floats work better. They don't dig in as much if the snow's not pristine.

I agree if I'm using floats that are practical to use on snow. The ones on the Quaker aren't, I don't think they are strong enough to take the hit coming in tail low and all the weight settling on the rear part. I do have planes with stronger or plastic floats that I do land on snow with but we only get a good snow every few years here.

Thank you for the kudos, guys! I think a Quaker on floats would be super fun. The extra weight would help it stay on the surface until I got to half throttle.

In case you're not up on floats Google "Chuck Cunningham, floats" and you will learn more than you thought possible.

Here is my latest Quaker. Floats are BJ 40" foam cores. Sorry I don't have a photo on water yet. I also use ski's in the winter. I made some from aluminum 4" wide by 24" long. They work great and don't noticably change the flight charactoristics.

Most of the guys around here use their floats on snow. Claim is that they are more tolerant of rough surface. I'll find out real soon if the weather reports are correct.
