It would be interesting to see a GP Super Sportster .90 ARF. Would that be considered a comeback?

RE: Planes That Deserve A Comeback.....

They made a 90/120 Super Sportster for a couple of years. It had a weak tail. They put out a fix, incorporated it in the new kits, then dropped the whole shebang.

Go figure...

Guys,
I agree any the Andrews kit should come back. I'm building and S Ray with my son. My first plane was in H Ray in 1974. Does anyone know if any the AeroMaster, plans are available from any source? I would also like to get my hands on a set of A ray wing plans. I do have a set of S Ray plans. I just made an extra copy for building yesterday. Reproduction was about 10 bucks.
If anyone has aeromaster plans let me know.
Mark Franke.

Hey Jpurcha, Check out bridiairplanes.com. If they don't have all you mentioned, they have most. Also Tower Hobbies has a Kaos ARF after they stopped kitting it. :D Hope this helps

Some that were missed...

The DeBolt line, especially the Cruizer. My dad told me that it was so stable that if there was a thermal or updraft of any kind it just floated...great for us newbies.
Also, don't know if these were kitted or not but the Ascender & Lil'Freak, both by Dale Root. Both great planes (from what I can remember.) I saw my dad's Ascender go into a flat spin & hit the deck hard- we all thought it was gone but the wing popped off & he needed to replace 1 prop & 1 landing gear, that was it.

Question. I have a bud nosen that my father built in the late 70's it has a 100 inch wing span an looks like a flying shoe box. it resembles a telemaster and only one aileron servo (ailerons are at the tips of the wing and the cowl is built up. What is this thing? My father cant remember and im curious thanks for any info

RE: Planes That Deserve A Comeback.....

Yep...that was a Bud Nosen design/kit. I can't remember the name, but seem to remember that it wasn't a particularly outstanding flyer. Perhaps a better choice of plane that is no longer available is the Midwest Sweet&Low Stick. What a terrific fly'n old plane.

Not mentioned yet, but certainly deserving is any of Rommey Burkholt's designs...including his (Concept) Fleet Bipe. One of the greatest flying little bipes EVER was his Barnstormer! The plans were once offered (I believe) from one of the mags, but even those are no longer available.

Hi guys,

This is an interesting thread for us newer pilots, like myself. I do know of one of the planes you discuss. One of my favorite flying planes out of the ones i own is my original kaos. Also someone had mention earlier on here about a place where the kwik fli was still avalible. I looked up the company, howard engineering, and all that came up was a list of manufacturs authorized by a vintage r/c aircraft association. Please tell me how i might go about contacting howard engineering about this plane.

My entry to the sport was not cool.....I spent a lot of time building and detailing a VK Cherokee. Needless to say, the iconoclast within me struck at the exact wrong time and the plane was totally destroyed. And I went back to trainers for a long time. But I would love to get another kit to build now that I have both a son and the ability to fly *LOL*. Also, I think I'd like to see a different mindset come back to our sport along with these planes: that sense of shared/renewed wonder that all of us felt when something that we've built flew for the first time. Or you helped someone fly for that first time. Just ask yourself honestly when was the last time you went out of your way to help a newbie at your field? You know who you are out there. I think that's one plane and one mindset that richly deserves a comeback.

I was totally out of the hobby far many years. When I came back, although I could fly, I required some help getting back to speed, both in flying and in tech advances. I picked up what points I could at my local field--some more useful than others. Some pretended like I wasn't there even to say hello and welcome me. That's why I feel it is necessary to put in a big "plug" for members of both the VR/CS, and SPA. I attended my first meet with each group just this flying season, and have never found a better, more helpful, and friendly bunch of guys anywhere. I'd been so busy building in the early part of the season, that by May 21st I still hadn't flown this year. I had a brand new Taurus that I started building from an original Top Flite kit 23 years ago, (long story), and had just decided to finish. I had too much time/emotion tied up in this plane to take it up, and chose a VR/CS fly-in as the site for its first flight. The guys there saved that plane, not only by doing the first flight, but by making several suggestions I would not have thought of otherwise that might have led to mechanical failure down the road. Three weeks later, I received valuable trimming advice from the pros at SPA, as well as a demonstration of what the plane could do in the hands of the right pilot.

These organizations are great, not just for the fellowship, and flying, but as a source of R/C knowledge that would either take a long time to get on my own, or I would never get elsewhere. I even came away with this great picture taken by Dick Petitt of the Taurus on "approach" during its second flight at the VR/CS fly-in.:)

Tower Hobbies Kaos kit would be another good one. Here's a pic of my .40 size. I would like to see the .60 come back also.:D

Top Flite "Live Wire 'T-Craft'. Also published in MODEL AIRPLANE NEWS. I liked mine so much that I have purchased plans and am going to scratch build 3 of them. Gonna do them in Metallic red, blue and green with a basic white. Will be using Duane Cole's trim pattern.

Rich,
Your remark about seeing something you created fly put a smile on my face.
I remember building my first RC plane back in '81 or '82. A Falcon 56.
I did everything you could imagine wrong...like not peeling the backing off the Monokote covering, etc.
When I took it to the field I had it literally picked apart.
Took it home and fixed all that I could.
When it flew I just stood there and giggled!
I got out of the hobby in the late '80s and am just now getting back.
I can't help but reminise when I am assembling my current plane.

I'd like to see the old Great Planes Trainer 60 again. Tower discontinued it about 10 years ago. It had a symmetrical wing and flew like a patern plane with a high wing - lots of fun.

I had a Midwest Strikemaster back in 76/77 and it was sweet! When you did a snap with that A/C it would tumble end over end. Wing loading was high and landing was an adventure and it finally succumbed to the dreaded repair weight syndrome but it was a kick to fly. I had a hot K&B .40 that had to run flat out to keep this A/C in the air.
I have an Aeromaster

1) The Goldberg Bucher Jungman. Beautiful plane. Looks like it's flying, even when on the ground.

2) Don Dewey's Wayfarer. I bought one, used, built from plans. I patched it up, and was shocked at how nice it flew. I'm not sure if this plane was ever kitted, but it should be. It could be the .40 sized flyers Hog Bipe.

Daniel....you and a bunch of us other guys would like to see that old trainer come back.

It has a little history. If I recall correctly it started life as Joe Bridi's RCM (magazine) Trainer. Plans were available (may still be) and it was kitted for a number of years. Bridi proved once and for all that ....YES....you CAN learn to fly using a symetrical wing. It's a very sweet flying plane, capable of about every manuver, but capable of very slow flight. The plane was designed as a tri-gear, but makes a super first taildragger. Some guys removed all dihedral and fitted them with a tuned pipe...made a great pattern plane trainer.

There are better looking and more sophisticated designs, but none that fly any better. It passes the test of what's a great little plane!

RE: Planes That Deserve A Comeback.....

I don't go back too far; late 80s. But, another vote for the Ace 4-X0 series. After learning to solo with a SIG Kadet MkII, a 4-40 with an FS-40 was my second plane. That plane was such a confidence builder. I would sometimes just do stall turns and touch-n-go's back and forth down the runway until the gas ran out and then just float it in. Man, I wish Ace had put the parts patters on their plans. I sold the plane when I was out of the hobby, but I still have the FS-40. Guess I need to get the original plans from AMA.

My third plane was a Midwest Super Hots with a .91 Surpass. That's another one they should bring back. Same story with the parts not being on the plans. What a solid flying plane that one was.

There was also this line of twins made by a guy named Bradford here in North Carolina. He had like four sizes. The man who taught me R/C had all of them, as i remember. By the time I felt ready to try a twin they were no longer available. Anyone remember these planes?
