Welp, thought I would make a quickie post reguarding my purchase of an Axe Cp. First flight went ok until on my thrid hover attempt I brought the main power up too fast and lost it. Banged a nearby chair. Oh well, my fault. Unfortunately, I broke a few inexpensive parts on the main rotor boom. Taking apart all that hardware is quite the chore. Just need Stabilizer Hub but I get the feeling replacing a main blade grip will be worse. I haven't had a modem yet I didn't break on the first day. :) That's life though....

Man you guys! Most of page 28 of this post is all about crashes, crashing, crashed! W.-T.-F.?!?

As a group, heads up! Cool down, take a step back, re-evaluate the risks of your next move, take a deep breath, double check your mechanicals, double check your electronics. Whew...

Be mellow, be safe, be in control, take the next step as a gradual baby-step. No need to crash today. Maybe later, but not today.

Now for my hover report! :D

Flawless! The end.

Well, a couple details for the record:

The final tiny 'wag' has been dialed out of my Axe CP tail system. A slight decrease on the Gy240 Gain Pot did the trick. Headling lock seems to be maintained, but its possible there is an incredibly slight left drift. I put in a single click of Right Rudder trim in the DX6 and that seems to compensate. Very slight fine tuning here.

I was hovering in the big conference room at work, and occasionally have to fight off air currents the main rotor has set up or the occasional blast from the big room's AC. A couple mild escape manuevers kept me from hitting a wall. Did tons of feather-touch landings and smooth lift-offs. NO TRAINING GEAR NEEDED anymore for indoor flying! I have graduated!!! :D

She's definitely ready again for the next long-awaited opportunity at outdoor 2d pattern flying. Need some dead calm weather. Had some this morning, as was tempted, but I was not 'in the zone' and it was a bit wet outside, slight drizzle even.

Now let's here more successful flight reports and less "I crashed, parts on order" reports!! :D

So I take my heli outside last night and there was a small wind blowing. This bird doesn't like the wind very much does it? I get her about 4 feet off the ground and then the wind starts. It'd swoop and dive and drift and glide all over the place. I spent more time avoiding hitting things than trying to hover. But hey... IT WAS A BLAST!!!!!!! Mind you I am still flying on the main blades (Blade CP) that I bought like a month ago, now that Im a little better I'll consider buying a set of OEM blades ;)

If its calm enough outside tonight I'll try to get some flight time in.

I have been taing baby steps. I have been flying without training gear for about a month now after the holes in the foam balls got to big. I have broken two skid mounts since te training gear from comeing down to hard in a wind. I was spot landing on a piece o plywood, but saw the elevated tub and could not keep the heli away. I had to try, You have to take those big steps sometimes to remind yourself just how inexperienced you really are.

Markind you still going after forward flight. Keep us updated. I haven't seen you on here in a while. (might just be because I haven't checked my email or read all of the posts I missed)

I have officially taken every part off my Axe at east once.

I was curious to see how much it wouuld cost to build a complete Axe Cp from just parts alone. From tower It would cost $450 for all stock parts and without a radio.

this just tells me that replacement parts are more than double what it really cost when they assemble the heli. And even than they are making good money.

Kinda cool to see how people are progressing with this freekin awesome heli we all have!
i just started doing circuits and figure 8's outside with some wind.
I dont know about you guys but my heli does pretty good even with 10mph winds.

Nose in scares the heck outta me.

I want my AXE back! I sent it in about a week and a half ago. I know that it isn't much time but reading this forum makes me want my heli back so much more. Good news. I should get it back on Monday. Horizon replaced the whole heli. I guess they had no warranty parts.

Hope this one is better as they didn't test fly or range check before sending it back to me.

RE: axe cp thread

The Axe is pretty steady in a good wind. I had Heli max Roto fly, peice of crap. It flew fine, but the tail motor burned out three times, sent it back a year ago. I took it outside and I am not lying, there wasn't even a 1mph wind and it was all over the place and the slightest downward movement on the left stick and it would just drop.

That is why I had so much hesitation about bying another helimax, But I am completely satifyed with the Axe, not parts prices though.

RE: axe cp thread

This is my Axe experience so far.

I have had my Axe for about 6 weeks now and feel like I am progressing rather well. I spent the first 3 weeks learning to hover in all orientations, including nose in, before venturing outside. After moving outside I started crashing often and loosing my orientation due to altitude as well as the occasional wind gust. I am now practicing forward flight by flying 40' circuits across my backyard. I am really focusing on smooth transitions and trying to keep the stopping to a minimum. It is just so frustrating knowing all of the things that I can do in G3.5, inverted hovering/flying, loops, rolls, banked circles, then struggling with basic forward flight on the real thing. So I will just keep practicing! I agree that Helimax parts are overpriced. But what are you going to do? T-Rex parts are very cheap compaired to the Axe. I think you can get a pack of 5 feathering shafts for what Helimax wants for one. However, I priced out a T-Rex450 SE V2 tonight at the LHS and it came in around $900 with tax and the SA model was only about $175 cheaper. For me, the high initial outlay would hurt much worse than the slow milking of a couple of extra bucks here and there. Don't get me wrong I plan on getting a T-Rex as soon as I feel I am ready to move up. But even then, will keep the Axe flying because it was my first heli.

Yeah you can use them, At the very most you will have to cut off the remaining one if it causes balancing issues.

I got mine back from Hobby Services today, Well I should say my replacement Axe.:D It hovers so much better than my original one, It's silky smooth on take off and just about hovers hands off in house. I bet if I trimmed it out a little it would, lol. My dilemma now is should I add the GY240 to this heli or put it on Axe #2? Heli #2 needs new electronics anyways as the previous owner tanked it in a lake. To put it back to stock it would need a new 3-1, receiver, 2 servos and tail fin. Then I could put it in the scale body I ordered and call it a day. I have a C-12 already so maybe I should just get a main motor speed control and receiver and wait for the belt drive conversion and put the GY240 in this one. Besides, Heli #1 is still under warranty, I don't know if they will honor the warranty if you do the gyro mod.:)

I had to send mine in and after reading this am getting anxious to get it back. I am new to heli's and have a lot to learn. My Axe CP was defective right out of the box, the first attempt at spool up the blade grip retaining screw failed. Which i understand that any one that has one that was shipped before 4/1/07 has the same type as mine. Hobby Services is offering a no cost upgrade if you have one of the previous versions. You can check it out at the Heli-Max web site. Aside from that the tail rotor did not work at all. Bummer. So, I am like a kid wanting my prize back. Hurry up Hobby Services :D

Ok, guys here is my problem I bought the axe cp and crashed it couldn't get parts from the world of hobbies retail store where I purchased ...in frustration I bought another axe from another hobby shop ....so far so good, but out of the box these things run like crap ....very hard to trim like nobody did any real test before putting it in a box. The guys at world of hobbies said nothing of it needing some tlc setup before trying to fly it but after I brought it back in for parts they were very willing to volunteer their services to he tune of $125 to do a setup. The guy said my main rotor shaft was bent so I spent money on parts not to mention a teardown for repair and it turns out all it was was an unbalenced set of rotor blades. well after I put this first heli back together it won't trim on the left and right rotor control ...turns out the potentiometer oon the e-board is not there ??? fell off a new e-board costs 85 bucks half the price of a complete new heli F- THIS I am sick of forking over money .....also on the other heli the tail rotor motor screws strip out like instantly and or get loose .....*** a 200 dollar heli is turning out to be a complete money pit. I am ready to sell everything I have invested for $400 bucks after investing a lil over $600 this blows! Does anyone have any ideas or advice ...did I just buy junk or what ? a hobby should not be this stressfull it isn't all about the money it's the frustration of buying something and it's ****! HELP!

Scotty sounds to me like you ended up buying a really nice heli from a really schitty hobby shop. The Axe is an excellent heli, however, like all helicopters it is not for the impatient. When I bought mine (it was on impulse) I took it completely apart and made sure nothing was bent or warped. Then I lovingly put it back together and it flew just fine. As for the busted potentiometer, call Helimax, their customer service is great!!

Question for anyone who as had to tear into there axe cp a bit. I dorked mine up a little. Slow flight about three feet of the ground and turned a little to sharp and sort of rolled her into the ground. All if did was break one of of the blade grips. After I got the grips on and everything I did some run ups and noticed that the center hub was wobbling alittle more than normal. I decided to take the the main shaft out to roll it and see if it was bent. This is my problem. I can't get it out. I slid the whole top assembly (squash plate, see saw, etc) off and took out the screw that goes through the main gear and shaft. I also loosened the shaft collar. I can not get it out and I don't want to put to much pressure on it because I don't want to break anything else. Am I missing something here? Something I need to remove that I missed? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I used a blow dryer on mine and itwill slide out easy. Also there is a wheel collar under the main frame that needs to be loosened.

I loosened up the collar that is underneath the top of the main frame. It seems like it won't separate from the main gear. The screw is out. is there a collar underneath the main gear?

skycarven 04-21-2007 12:44 PM

RE: axe cp thread

And, is the shaft supposed to come through the top or bottom and does it matter? I do not see any other collars or screws. I tried the blow dryer and it will barely budge.

BoysToys 04-21-2007 01:18 PM

RE: axe cp thread

It comes out the top. What exactly is getting stuck? Getting the main gear off the shaft can be pretty difficult I used a screwdriver to pry mine off while pulling the shaft from the top. Like chaseman sugggested, heating the main gear/shaft up with a hairdryer seem to help out as well. Good luck.

skycarven 04-21-2007 04:10 PM

RE: axe cp thread

Yeah, the problem is getting the shaft separated from the main gear. I will keep working at it. So where the shaft connects to the gear is pretty tight then? Thanks for the help!

Been monkeying around with a 6EXH and the Axe right now it is unflyable. Wondering if anyone is running this radio for the Axe and would like to offer their setup numbers for all the menus.

the shaft and the gear have a D Shape to them. you might have to tap it lightly in the center to get it out. Have someone hold it for you to help.

RE: axe cp thread

Skycarven had that exact same problem earlier today, ended up cutting it off at the main gear after scratching the hell out of it with a pair of pliers. Waisted six bucks because it ends up it wasn't the shaft that was causing the wabbling. I have no advice for that, I would just say if it flys fairly fine just put it back together. When I put the new shaft on I had to sand it down because it wouldn't even slide into the gear.

It wablles flom side to side, and the tail rotor is not responding to any trim. Could this be an eboard. If it is not I am going to think about selling. It is a good heli but I have to keep putting money that I don't have into it. MIght go for a plane, the controls and repairs seem a lot more strait forward to fix.

I might be a little irational right now because I spent wo ful days trying to fix the stupidest crash with no success. At the point that if it doesn't fly with minor corrections the next time I go outside I am going to throw it at the wall.

Wish everyone luck with their heli because I am not having it with mine
