Sounds promising so far. :D While at the LHS today they mentioned that they had a bunch of defective chargers in the back room. I didn't think to ask if they were for the Axe but that was my impression. I think on my stock battery I was getting around 8 to 10 mins of floor flying. Man I hope it was a poorly charged battery for you and you can get to flying.

I know, I need to be careful not to damage the bearings as they apparently have to be purchased as part of a whole darn set, which of course is more $ than the average part.
When you do feel that you need new ball bearings along the main rotor shaft, use these (or the like): [link=http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/256965.asp]XTM Ball Bearings[/link] - they're only $9 for four bearings instead of $35 for the Axe bearings set. I changed to the XTM bearings out of necessity a couple months back and the difference was huge!

Oh, in case you haven't run across this: [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5579975/tm.htm]Alternative AXE CP parts thread[/link].

SM, is right about the bearings. If you know the dimensions every one of them is available seperately or in pairs. Also the stock bearings are well... crap. So better bearings can yield a great improvment especially in high stress areas like the mainshaft.

Well, I am going to change my name to the "Emu". Called support today and spoke with Rich. I am shipping my Axe back to the Techs for repair/replacement (which ever they decide) so I will be flightless (Emu'ed) for a while. Rich's initial summation is that the e-board or rx is causing the glitching. Time will tell after the techs look it over. At least I will know what caused the problem hopefully.
Whilst you guys fly your birds, if you hear an odd whine of sorts, don't worry about your heli, it will just be me standing outside wailing at the moon (or sun).

I am just now sitting down to install my Park 370 into my SOFA2 (yep, Son of Franken Axe 2).

Going with the 10-tooth pinion gear. Target headspeeds: 2250 - 2850 RPM

New Brushless Motor and ESC for my Axe installed! The ESC installed very neatly directly beneath the motor, and does not interfere with or bind up the canopy. Next step: solder up the Dean's connectors and test the motor / ESC. Looks like I may pick up the tail motor and ESC from my LHS this week...

Dang, I WISH the Axe could have been sold as a cheap $99 ARF. Then I could have bypassed the crummy radio, rcvr, e-board, and motors from the start...

In other news:

I energized my new TREX 450SEV2 systems yesterday for the first time, sans Gy401. Got the servos centered, next step install servo arms, ball links, etc.

Fired up the motor to a low speed with no main blades - nice. May have to back off the motor from the main gear slightly.

RE: axe cp thread

wow you still haven't gotten the TRex in the air? Good thing too, because once you do..... HELI-CRACK!!!!!! You are gonna be addicted!! As for the gear mesh, if you are messing with it to reduce the noise. Don't bother. TRexes are VERY noisy birds, especially new ones. Give the maingear time to wear in and it'll quiet down a tad.

hey guys, I've got a question concerning li-po's...

am I right in understanding that I can pick up a dual charger (superbrain 977) and say one of the Equinox balance ports (from Tower) and use this to chage packs? what I'm understanding is that I can use the balancer on the pack, then plug it in to charge. I understand that I can use the balancer in conjuction with the charger, but for now, I want to minimize cash out so would like to just get one of the balancer things...

in other news... the Axe CP is coming together slowly, still having problems (either wiring to the rcvr or I read I need a new crystal) with inputs at the trans and movement on the servo's... oh yeah, the MX is flying beautifully... better than a CP ever did...

oh yeah, can I throw the motor/esc combo from my spare MX into the Axe CP? sounds like a pretty decent idea right? will I be overpowering it too bad?

Strat,

If you're using the 7CAP radio with the Axe's stock receiver, you have to be sure both are on the same frequency AND the 7CAP is set up for PPM not PCM. PPM is FM and should work with the AXE's stock receiver. Some here have found that the rx is mainly a high range rx meaning the frequencies are at the high end of the scale. ( like 36 up to 60) The lower numbers might not work with the rx. You can change crystals in the receiver without too many glitches, however, if you want to change the crystal in your Transmitter, you should get it tuned at a service center. Now, your Futaba 7 might use "modules" which you can switch out yourself without sending it out for service.

Reading back through this it sounds confusing. Hope it all makes sense for ya.

RE: axe cp thread

Pilot Light - makes sense, my radio is the 6EXH, but I did buy it on the same frequency as the Axe (specifically for this reason) I do believe I'm in the PCM mode and not PPM - I wonder if this will be a "global" change to the radio or if it's model specific?

thanks for the help man!

(I may just go pick up a new recvr/crystal combo if I continue to have problems on the setup, it'll just eliminate the reciever as a variable)

Heliko 08-14-2007 07:14 PM

RE: axe cp thread

Strat I'm using a 7CHP with the stock Rx and it works flawlessly. I had to switch to PPM though. In PCM it didn't work at all.

Switching to PPM is easy. Here's what I found for the 6EXH.

To select modulation:
1. Access the Model Select function in the programming mode (by pressing the MODE and
SELECT keys simultaneously and holding them down for one second). Use the DATA
INPUT lever to select the model memory you wish to modulation select.

2. Push SELECT key twice after seeing on the screen the model memory where you want to
set modulation, then you will see “PULS” on the screen.

3. To select PCM modulation, push the DATA INPUT lever up. The “PCM” is displayed. To
select PPM modulation, push the DATA INPUT lever down. The “PPM” is displayed.

4. To get the transmitter to operate in the new mode, switch transmitter power off and then on.
The small indicator will indicate the mode, either PPM or PCM.

Well I'm not sure it's the battery. The night that I deliberately drained it, it took nearly two full hours to charge, so I figured I got a good charge. It did make a difference, but I still didn't get it off the floor. I haven't had time since then to devote to it (guess I need to quit my job and leave my wife and devote my time to Axe maintenance :D). I have some parts on the way but in the meantime, someone in another thread suggested that the motor might have gotten jounced in a crash and the motor gear may have gotten forced into the main gear and is too tight and hindering speed. So I'll check that out as well as trying to fix tracking. I just hope this doesn't all turn out to be a problem with the e-board; I'm not sure how to determine that.

Heliko & s_mcflurry,

Thanks for the tip on the alternate bearing options. I'll keep that in mind.

Hmm...just got a free shipping offer from Tower. may be time to pull the trigger on a lipo solution.

Man, I must be charmed; I've posted the 1st message in 3 of the last 4 pages of this thread. And I'm not even trying. I wish my odds with the Axe were that good. On the other hand, maybe I should go and buy a PowerBall ticket. That would pay for a lot of Axe parts. [sm=wink_smile.gif]

RE: axe cp thread

Man, I know what you mean. I'm going to have to get a second job for this hobby. I finally gave up and called support and sent it back to them to fix. Trying to bid on a Transmitter in the meantime. I realized that after I get one with a new receiver I am going to have to replace it. I do okay with a soldering gun but I dread taking a chance on not getting it right and burning up a new receiver. Oh well, wish me luck on a low price and getting my bird back soon.
Give support a call - see what they have to say - maybe it is something they can talk you through and get it flying for you. If it is a bad part just as well get it fixed now as later.

I do believe the motor will drop right in, I looked at it last night and it looks good. The only thing holding me back is radio setup... when I push my two sticks are reversed!!! when I push the throttle open, it applies forward cyclic to the heli, use the right stick and push forward, my servo's act like they should when the throttle is moved. I'm not sure on the motor part, I have that disconnected right now.. anyone have any idea what to change? I've went through this one in my mind and am drawing a blank...

I sized my mx400 motor last night as well, I agree it will drop right in, what about the gear, what are you going to use for that?

you had to throw a snag into my evil little plan didn't you? hmmmm..

I was actually thinking (I didn't do much on the gear by the way) that I'd use the pinion from my MX for it, if that don't work, I'll use the stock pinion for the CP, when/if it flies then I'll start looking at number of teeth that I need to use...

the gear on the mx does not mesh with the head gear on the CP, and the pinion on the CP will not fit on the MX motor, the motors have different shaft sizes.
I am going to put the CP Pinion in a collet in the lathe and ream out the hole so it fis on the mx motor

one small advantage being a tool maker, I was alos going to take a head from a mx 450 and put it onto the cp

that blows!

but, didn't I see someone do a conversion to include an MX400 main gear on the CP? [sm=confused.gif] let me look around again and see what I can find, I'll use the MX gear/pinion combo if I can make it work.

yeah, man... the conversion link!
