ESC for the MX400?
Would this ESC be a good choice for use on the MX400 heli? I'm seen several posts concerning the Heli-Max ESC with problems of it starting the main rotor too fast so I guess it is best to stear clear of it?

RE: ESC for the MX400?
That one should work a lot better than the one that comes with the Pro Version of the
MX400. I know cause I've got one....and I'm gonna get a better ESC. Just be sure the controller has long enough leads to allow you to mount it on the outside of the frame. They need lots of cooling air. Bob |
RE: ESC for the MX400?
How long would you say the leads need to be out on each side of the ESC? There's a full picture of the ESC in its [link=http://manuals.hobbico.com/gpm/gpmm1800-manual.pdf]manual[/link] but I didn't see any mention of wire lead length. I'll try to send a query to Great Planes about it.

RE: ESC for the MX400?
Well they should be about 3" at least but I think 4" is better. The leads on the stock
motor are kind of short so you need long ESC leads to make up for it. IMO Bob |

I use the 35A Align ESC(AGNE35G), it has a heat sink on it as well. I use it with an Align 430L motor. It's the bottom one obviously.;)

RE: ESC for the MX400?
If you do a search on Align ESC's you'll discover that they seem to have a lot of mysterious ailments. I'm looking for a new ESC also and based on what I've read on here I won't get Align. I think the Century CNE 425 would be a much better choice.

RE: ESC for the MX400?
I use a Phoenix 35 speed controller, it is A LOT better than the stock helimax one that started to fail on me

RE: ESC for the MX400?
Thanks for all the input - it's very helpful. I'm trying to make sure I purchase one that I'll be happy with.

ORIGINAL: linuxman Thanks for all the input - it's very helpful. I'm trying to make sure I purchase one that I'll be happy with. Basically you will be ok with any 30-35A ESC. My Align ESC never gets above 100 degrees since it has a heat sink on it. I think it's the only one that does actually. Castle Creations makes a very nice, reliable ESC as well, but they are bit more expensive. |
RE: ESC for the MX400?
Another vote for the Castle Phoenix 35. I don't have any experience with the Align part, but the Phoenix is programmable for days and treats the heli a lot more gently than the HM one. It doesn't have a heat sink on it, but seems to be fine without it.

RE: ESC for the MX400?
Where do you guys mount the ESC at.. Is it under the Frame or on the side .. i have seen someone, not sure in this forum or on another one somewhere else that they advise to mount it on the side to keep it cooler .. I also have the Align ESC that i`am mounting it on a new 450XS

RE: ESC for the MX400?
Looks good, No temp Problems ???
|
RE: ESC for the MX400?
No, temps run just around 80F after full battery discharge. Matching the proper Amp motor with ESC makes a difference as well.
For example a 25A ESC is going to run hot with a 35A motor. |
RE: ESC for the MX400?
from what i have heard the stock halimax esc works fine if you have an ext BEC

RE: ESC for the MX400?
WhatThe.... Well, IF you had ever actually used a stock mx-400 ESC you'd know that the
problem with them is not heat. Its that the ESC makes the motor start with a bang...like its at full throttle and that makes the blades fold up and/or the heli spin. And thats hard on main gears. I got rid of mine right away and got one that is adjustable....much better. Bob |
RE: ESC for the MX400?
What about these ESCs from Heli-Max?
[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLTU6&P=7]Heli-Max Brushless ESC w/Heatsink 25A[/link] or [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMRE7&P=7]Heli-Max Brushless ESC w/Heatsink 40A[/link] Both descriptions on Tower include: "Brake non-active/active setting allows for hard start or soft start modes" So do these suffer from the same problem that [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLBR5&P=7]this one[/link] suffers from as far as the quick starting up of the motor...? |
RE: ESC for the MX400?
Yes, they have the same issue. The soft start isn't. Get the Phoenix.

RE: ESC for the MX400?
Dito on the phoenix 35 I love mine on my MX400.

RE: ESC for the MX400?
I see the CC Phoenix is quite popular. Right now I'm looking at this power combination.

RE: ESC for the MX400?
Tex,
Thanks for providing those photos in response to the ESC question. In the photo I see a blue motor. Which motor is that? and which pinion gear do you have on it? This is a great thread and I appreciate being able to read all the good technical discussion. I'm looking at buying a MX400 since Tower has them so reasonably priced. Thanks to all for sharing the tribal knowledge. Best regards, S_Dave |

RE: ESC for the MX400?
I just checked. I don't have velcro on hand yet but it looks like the canopy only slightly pushes the battery up in the front. I should have some velcro tomorrow so I'll get a better idea of any issues. Without velcro on the battery or heli frame I was able to mount the canopy - will see how things work tomorrow with velcro. Are you saying you're unable to get the canopy mounted when this battery is used?
